Help Emily Pay for Surgery

Donation protected
Hello, friends! My name is Emily, and I’m raising money to pay for some of the costs associated with a surgery I had in April.

Last month, I needed to remove my left Bartholin gland due to cysts that had grown on the gland, ballooned, and became infected. Some of y’all know this already, but I’ve struggled with this condition for years. In 2015, I had surgery to remove the right gland after I became so sick I could no longer walk, let alone go to school or work. Prior to 2015, I had had the cysts for two years, but no one took my concerns seriously.

My former doctor overlooked the gland; my ex-boyfriend dismissed my concerns and asked me, “Why can’t you just let your body heal itself?” For two years I went undiagnosed and was left in severe pain and confusion. Having my health concerns invalidated triggered an extreme case of health anxiety that lasted for years.

Through a combination of therapy, jogging, and meditation, my anxiety is now much more in control. I am fortunate enough to have health insurance because I made the choice to leave adjunct teaching for more financial stability. I am also lucky in that this is not a chronic or life-threatening condition—but it is expensive. Friends have asked how they can help, so I’ve created this page. The $610 will go to savings, a small loan payment, and the fees associated with this platform.

Full disclosure—I have paid for my bills in full, but they were more expensive than originally projected. In order to pay off the bills, I’ve had to drain more of my savings than I had wanted and will have to skip a student loan payment. I was already a month ahead on these so I won’t default, but this means interest will accrue for two months on a large sum.

If you have the resources and would like to contribute, I will be infinitely grateful. If you can’t make a donation, but would like to help, sharing this page is fantastic and will be much appreciated! And please check out the poems I wrote as part of my recovery process linked below. If anyone else has experienced health anxiety, I hope they help!

Warmly,

Emily
