Carmen's Medical Fund

Donation protected
On April 24, 2017, my sister-in-law Carmen Cadavid, mother of Carolina and beloved wife of my brother John, was diagnosed with ALS and her world changed forever. This came as a total shock to our entire family, and we are learning more about her diagnosis and treatment plan. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, progressively affects nerve cells in the brain and
the spinal cord, ultimately resulting in the loss of ability to use one's muscles. An average person lives 3-5 years from the first onset of symptoms. The body degenerates slowly, while the mind remains intact.

As if the ALS diagnosis was not enough, it came in the aftermath of my brother losing his job last November. Since the diagnosis itself took so long, and the medical bills from the diagnosis kept rolling in, their financial situation has become very precarious. They have made cuts in their spending to reduce expenses, but still struggle to pay their bills. Their financial situation has escalated to the point that very quickly they will be faced with losing their house of 22 years.

Needless to say, in this short period of time, John and Carmen’s lives have changed dramatically. They are no longer able to work – Carmen because of the toll this terrible disease has taken on her body, and John, of
course is by his wife’s side to lovingly care for her. In spite of this, my brother continues to look for a job, but he has not been able to find job prospects at his former level of responsibility and pay grade. He is currently taking some classes to be able to substitute teach.

My brother has exhausted all other avenues and his daily expenses have become overwhelming. Carmen with her limited energy needs to focus on staying strong to fight this paralyzing disease -- not on how to pay for it.

Please help make a difference in her life and donate whatever you can towards her fight. No amount is too small!

How You Can Help:
This GoFundme campaign will help Carmen in her fight with ALS including medical bills, home renovations and adaptive equipment she will need for mobility and communications.

Any help, donations, and prayers are accepted with immense gratitude.
