Save the historic Water Tower

Donation protected
As the Fulton River District continues to add modern architecture to the skyline, we are working diligently to do whatever we can to preserve our roots.

The building was designed in the 1880s by architect, F.H. Waescher, for E.W. (Eliphalet Wickes) Blatchford, a famous Chicago industrialist, and in 1889 these buildings sustained a major fire.  Adler & Sullivan rebuilt the earlier building's interior and designed and constructed a five-story corner building (230 N. Clinton Building-SW corner of Clinton and Fulton) in 1889. The building was once home to Mastercrafter's Clock Factory as well as other offices. It is important to note that the building was designed by one of the great architectural firms of Chicago, and also on "the world stage." To learn more about the building, you can reference the book "The Complete Architecture of Adler & Sullivan", page 371, co-authored by Richard Nickel, Aaron Siskind, John Vinci and Ward Miller, and published in 2010.

So, you have one of the handful of existing Adler & Sullivan buildings-- and also an industrial commission
Clinton Street Lofts is over 100 years old and had been said to be the home of Mastercrafters Clock factory and offices. Today, the space is an open beamed timber loft building spanning a city block by half a city block and capped with the original water tower.

A decision of investing in the structural repairs for the water tower or demolishing it is looming as the cost difference is $22,000. Losing the historic icons that were erected on the early 1900's would be a travesty for the building and the Fulton River District neighborhood.

There are few sights more repugnant than the old, rusting, leftover pads where a water tower once stood tall amongst the skyline.

Help to avoid allowing a shift that is a determent to the Chicago area view and to preserve a historical aspect of culture.  The neighborhood was erected in this spirit and we hope to maintain these components.

Please help to preserve this structure by donating to save the aspects of the Chicago River Branch that give Chicago the historic look and feel of old brick and timber loft warehouses with water towers adding to this incredible skyline.

Thank you to Ward Miller, Executive Director of Preservation Chicago for his contribution in the historical details of the building.
