Oregon Milkweed Project
Donation protected
Since 1998, the Oregon Milkweed Project has been collecting seed of Oregon native milkweeds (Asclepias sp.) and propagating and distributing seed and seedlings free of charge to Oregon residents.
The main purpose is to restore habitat for the Western population of the Monarch butterfly that was lost to residential, commercial and agricultural development in the Willamette Valley over the past century.
A seconday purpose is to encourage the planting of region-appropriate native plant species that support healthy populations of native pollinators.
Interest in pollinator conservation has grown rapidly over the past few years, and in 2015 seed requests have topped eight hundred. This is in addition to the hundreds of packets of seed I give away at various events throughout the year.
Oregon Milkweed Project is not a non-profit organization, and does not sell seed or plants; every seed request is filled free of charge, and whatever seedlings I am able to grow are given away, no strings attached. I have resisted accepting donations thus far, but at this rate the expenses involved have moved the project from the realm of hobby to something more. I have started this campaign to raise money for the following expenses:
1. Packaging materials: Estimated at $300 - $350 for printing services for seed packets, educational brochures and instruction sheets.
2. Postage: Estimated at $350 - $400 for mailing seed packets.
3. Pots and soil mix: Estimated at $300 for a one year supply.
If the campaign is successful, I will be able to increase the number of seedlings I give away and have some nicer seed packets printed, as well as paying for printing and postage.
Thank you for your consideration ,
Richard Harding
