Blue-Med Africa Medical Relief Trip

We are Medical Students at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and this summer, as part of the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), we will be volunteering our time and efforts with the non-profit organization, Blue-Med Africa, on a Medical Relief Trip in Ho, Ghana.
During our time in Ghana, we will be volunteering with medical professionals, in order to provide the local people with the health care they so desperately need. The area we will work in is one of the most impoverished areas in this region.
Each day, our team will be traveling to different sites, hospitals, mobile clinics, and orphanages to treat the local people who wait for Blue-Med Africa’s attention all-year round. We will be giving back to the community with doctors, dentists, nurses, students, and other medical professionals. Aside from providing medical services, supplies, vaccines, and medications to the locals, we will also be providing health education to both patients and orphans in the local community. In order to be able to truly make a difference and make the most of this once in a life time opportunity, we as a group want to reach our goal of $5,000 USD. All of the money will go towards purchasing the necessary supplies to be fully equipped to give every patient in Ghana the best medical care we are able to provide.
The funds raised will be used to purchase what seems like miscellaneous items to those in the United States, but vital medical supplies for those in Ghana, such as but not limited to: alcohol swabs, glucose meters and strips, iodine, gauze, etc. We will also use some of the funds to purchase malaria medication -- medication that can be very expensive. This medication will allow Blue-Med Africa to treat more of their patients for free.
Aside from strictly medical supplies, we also hope to use some funds to purchase items such as clothes/shoes, toys, stickers, school supplies, and toothbrushes for the orphans, who we will also spend time caring for medically.
As privileged medical students living in the United States, we are fortunate enough to be part of an established healthcare system, and a society that places value on health education and awareness. We believe healthcare and health education should be a right for all and not simply a privilege. As medical students, we will use these beliefs to give back in any way we possibly can-- especially while over in Ho, Ghana with Blue-Med Africa.
We will be using 100% of the proceeds to benefit the patients and residents of Ho. Any contribution helps, and please keep in mind that our goal is to utilize this money to purchase as many medical resources in the United States to then hand deliver to Blue-Med Africa when we arrive in Ghana!
