By all accounts, 2019 was off to a wonderful start for my Father-in-law , Jim Johnson. He had recently welcomed his second Granddaughter, a beautiful baby girl named Poppy to the world. Jim was surrounded by family and busy with work. There was much to be grateful for at the start of the new year.
In early February, Jim began to experience shortness of breath and fatigue. After a few visits to the doctor, Jim was told to "get some rest" as he was experiencing a nasty case of the "Flu". His health deteriorated quickly through the month of February and by the end of the month, as a last-ditch effort to figure out why his flu had worsened, he went to the emergency room. Here Jim began the fight for his life. Jim was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). AML had overrun his body and without quick and decisive medical care he would not see the end of March. With this news, he immediately was hospitalized to undergo a blood transfusion.
For those of you who are not familiar with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), it is a nasty business. It is a type of cancer that attacks your blood and bone marrow. It is extremely aggressive and, if left untreated, will often be fatal within a matter of months. The Advanced stage of this disease (which Jim has) required an equally aggressive treatment plan be put into place. Luckily, this is exactly what his team of oncologists at the University of Colorado Hospitals (UC Health) has done. Jims Chemotherapy treatment began within 72 hours of his arrival and this initial phase of aggressive Chemotherapy and stabilization lasted for 30 days. Following his first round of chemo, Jim was allowed to go home for a few weeks to rest and spend time with his family.
Jim's road has and will continue to be a hard one, with numerous hospital stays and testing. On April 17th Jim was admitted back to the hospital for phase 2 of his treatment plan that will require a minimum of a 90-day hospital stay. On April 18th, Jim began his second chemotherapy treatment. Once this cycle is completed, Jim will then undergo a Bone Marrow Transplant that we are hopeful will be a success. If everything proceeds as planned and no serious issues arise, Jim's journey will continue as Jim will require blood work to be done twice a week for the next 52 weeks to ensure the success of his transplant and to monitor any return of cancer. For most, if not all of the year, Jim will be greatly limited in his capacity to work.
Physically, the toll of this disease is devastating. Jim has gone from a healthy viral man in his mid-fifties, an avid hiker and skier, to a man who struggles to complete a simple walk down the Hospital hallway. The road he must now travel will be long and difficult. He must first tame his debilitating and life-threatening disease, and then begin to find his way back to health. Jim's goal is that by the fall of this year, he will be able to resume a light physical schedule. Our Goal is to raise enough money to pay the significant number of bills that have and will continue to accumulate. This goal includes paying Jim's mortgage, utilities, and Medical bills that continue to come regardless of what your health situation is. Our extended family has been great and continues to pitch in, but we ask other caring people to step forward and to help Jim and his family deal with the financial toll of what this disease has brought. We so greatly appreciate any help that you may provide.
