Mariah is a 9th grade student at Elkins High School and is currently at Arkansas Childrens's Hospital in Little Rock with Acute Renal (kidney) Failure due to complications from a rare condition called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS.)
What started out as a stomach bug due to the E-Coli virus has become a potentially life threatening situation. Her status deteriorated quickly and she is undergoing dialysis. She began at WRMC Tuesday Aug. 24th and was sent home. The following morning, she was taken to Children's Hospital in Springdale, AR. By Sunday, August 2nd she became unstable was transferred to Little Rock Children's Hospital with acute renal failure, dehydration and hypertension. Currently, Katie is in Little Rock while Anthony is in NWA with their younger daughter and will be traveling back and forth daily. We are raising money to cover deductibles, travel, and other medical expenses as well as provide Katie with food and any other needs she may have.
Mariah is a member of the Elkins FFA. And has a great love for animals, especially horses. While at the Washington County Fair she started feeling ill and it appears that is where she picked up the E-Coli virus.
What began as a common stomach bug has turned into a critical situation very rapidly. Until dialysis has been given for several times, we will not know how much damage her kidneys have. We are being told there is a potential that one kidney would be removed, or dialysis until a donor kidney can be acquired. She will be in Pediatric ICU until she is stable and then will have a minimum of 1 week on the floor following her release from PICU. Doctors have stated that she will be in the hospital anywhere from 3 weeks to several months, depending on how well her kidneys recover. The family lives approximately 170 miles away from the hospital.
