Z Giglio Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Z, an energetic 4 year old boy, and his family need our help.

In early 2018, 3 year old Z developed a spontaneous abscess.  He was immediately seen by his Pediatrician and put on antibiotics.  His doctor also referred him to be seen by a surgeon.  Before seeing the surgeon,  his abscess spontaneously opened and started to drain.  At the appointment, the surgeon told Z's mom to "keep doing what she was doing' " So, four months of dressing changes multiple times a day at home by mom, a few follow-up visits with the surgeon where he tried using silver nitrate (traumatic!!!) hoping that it would encourage the top layer of skin to close completely. But, it wasn't working. Z's doctors gave his parents the choice to continue the silver nitrate (which clearly wasn't helping) or a quick surgery (which the surgeon highly recommended) to create an incision that could be stitched so that it would "heal quickly." Z's parents chose the surgery.

Unfortunately, the sutures "popped" at 5 days post op, and Z had to go back into surgery.  A noticeably larger incision with much thicker suture was the result of that operation and the surgeon was confident that Z would "heal right up."  Tragically, 10 days post THAT operation, those sutures tore his poor skin and he was left with a traumatic deep wound  that was now about 6 times wider and much deeper than what he had in the beginning.

Mom demanded a wound care consult at that time as his wound was now much more serious. All of this was pretty overwhelming for a little human!  Especially due to the location.  The "owie" is on the buttock, but after the two surgeries, it extends further up and is very close to the anus.   To effectively remove the sutures initially and then to perform wound care, Z  had to be put under anesthesia weekly for dressing changes in the OR for several weeks.  Mom continued doing multiple dressing changes each day due to the location with supplies recommended by Wound care and bought off Amazon-literally hundreds of dollars worth of supplies a week.  By the end of 2018, the wound finally had made progress and once again appeared almost fully healed from the outside, except for a concerning spot that mom noticed on his skin.

In December 2018, the scar tissue over the wound started swelling.  Their Wound Care practitioner prescribed antibiotics, recommended a couple different surgeons, and the family chose a  new doctor to look into the issue to try to get Z, now four years old, fully healed.  Spring of 2019, Z went through a series of tests, ultrasounds, an ER visit, and an MRI which determined that a fistula (an opening or tunnel under the skin) had formed. They also found a questionable spot on his pelvic bone.

In April 2018, Z underwent a third surgery in which a seton (a drain) was placed in the fistula in hopes of allowing the surrounding tissue to heal completely (and then later on address how to repair the fistula). Bone marrow biopsies were taken. The results basically showed a bone infection had developed from the wound making a track or tunnel to his bone.  Z just went to OR again in May and had a PICC line placed to provide access for long term IV antibiotics, blood draws, etc. They also did upper and lower GI scopes to rule out a couple different conditions as well.  At the conclusion of this treatment, Z will have more surgeries to fully repair the fistula, and of course, follow up tests will be completed to ensure the infection in his bone is fully gone.  His parents and the doctors will also need to discuss the results of the scopes that aren't in yet at the time of this posting.

It will be well into late 2019 when Z is five years old and has been dealing with these medical issues for the  better part of two years. There could also be very long term implications. We pray constantly this will be all that's needed to get Z back to a healthy state to fully enjoy the thrills of childhood.  The family prays for healing daily and just wants their Rainbow to be able to stay strong and heal well!

Liz and Jason have just finished paying off the initial $12,000 of medical bills from 2018, but now have been swamped with even more medical bills, most likely to be at least in the $100,000 range by the time this year has finished.  The deductible for their insurance is $8,000 which will be the minimum needed for treating Z.  With the events of the last year, and now this new plan of care that will take months, it has really put them in a financial hardship they could not have been prepared for. Liz has endured her own medical issues following a rollover car accident a few years ago, and is a stay at home mom for Z. Jason is the sole provider for his family and normally works 60 hours per week to make ends meet.  All prayers and any gifts will be a great blessing to their family.  Thank you for your kindness.
