On June 8th, Angela Shymanski and her 5 year old daughter Lexi, and 10 week old baby Peter, where in a terrible car crash. Angela's car veered down a 40 foot embankment outside Jasper, AB. Angela was unconscious, and heroic daughter Lexi, barefooted climbed the embankment, to summon help and save her mother's life. The three were airlifted to Edmonton for a 19 day hospital stay. Angela broke her back in two spots, and needed CPR, causing further broken bone. She underwent surgery to repair internal bleeding and had some organs removed. She is now confined to a wheelchair. 10 week old Peter underwent Neurosurgery, to alleviate swelling of his brain. Amazingly Lexi came out with only scratches! The family has now returned home, and is facing the realities of a new life. There is a loss of income from Angela's job as a swim instructor, and the B&B she ran out of their home. Husband Travis is off of work to provide around the clock care to Angela and the kids, as Angela's condition prevents her from being able to hold her baby. Additionally, the family will need to make trips to Edmonton for medical follow up, as that is where their Doctors and Specialists are located. The family has amazing support from family, friends, and their congregation, but is still in need of financial assistance. If you can, please help to alleviate this burden, so they can focus on healing inside and out.

Update 3

An update from the family! Last week we celebrated our first anniversary post accident! What a year it's been! We would not be here without the amazing supper of family, friends and our worldwide community! Thank you all so much! Our little "hero", Lexi is almost done kindergarten! She has done so well and loved French immersion! Peter has begun to walk, and is saying a few words like " woof", "mama" " dad" and "Hi!" ( he loves to wave to strangers when we are out and about- he is SO friendly!). Can you believe he has been on 37 flights in his first year? We have had MANY trips back to Edmonton to see Angela's spinal team. It has been determined that Angela will benefit from a DISC REPLACEMENT surgery. The challenge? This surgery had only been in Canada for a few years. Having no spleen ( ie: infection fighter!) AND previous abdominal surgery/trauma increases the complexity of this surgery, as they come at the spine through the front ( abdominally), SO at this point, NO surgeon in Canada will take on Angela's case, which has led us to search beyond Canada for a surgeon. In Germany, they have been doing this surgery for 15-20 years, so we are now pursuing this option. The caveat? Surgery outside Canada comes at a cost. A high cost. We are looking at an estimate of $50,000 for surgery and travel, not including Travis' time off work AND care for the children, especially Peter post-surgery, as Angela will not be able to lift Peter for months afterwards.
No place we'd rather be! One year post accident! June 8, 2016. We still have a long road ahead, but we've come this far from the loving support of family, friends and our worldwide community!

A note from the family! Thank you all SO much for your loving comments and generous donations. This has helped us tremendously during this difficult time.

An update: Angela is slowly regaining strength, and is now able to hold Peter but still
cannot lift or carry him. She is starting to use a walker around the house but is awaiting yet another surgical consult for her back. Peter seems to be doing well at this time, making milestones and growing like a weed! Lexi is happy to be home with her dog and three little ducks and Travis has started back to work. Thank you all SO much for your kind messages, prayers, generous donations, gifts of meals, acts of service such as help with housekeeping and childcare. We have been astounded at the outpouring of love towards our little family.

The family appeared on Dr Oz Show on Monday, September 14th. You can watch a clip here: http://www.doctoroz.com/episode/how-channel-super-human-you?video_id=4478508873001

To answer some commonly asked questions: yes, we are Jehovah's Witnesses and part of our worship is a weekly " family worship evening". What we talked about on Dr Oz was what we had done for our Emergency Preparedness Family Worship (exactly a year to the date ) previous to the car accident.

That night, we had also written emergency contact info (with sharpie!) on Lexi's car seat, and gone through our disaster preparedness kit with Lexi ( and moved it out of the basement to right by the front door in the front closet so that we could actually access it). And finally we had made her walk barefoot to our closest neighbour's house (0.5km away). There is no doubt that this contributed to our survival after the car accident!

We have never told Lexi to "not talk to strangers"; rather, we have always impressed upon Lexi the difference between Good Strangers and Bad Strangers. This is one reason she was "brave" enough to flag down help from the Good Strangers.

For more information about Jehovah's Witnesses, our beliefs and the Bible- please visit www.jw.org

Another common question from other parents is what kind of car seat was Lexi in?

She was in the Diono Radian RXT. Every time I moved this HEAVY car seat, I would complain, but that heavy, steel frame saved her life! ( and mine and Peter's as a result). When the frame of your vehicle is bent from an impact car accident, a plastic car seat will not survive. I'm sure of it! This seat is worth every penny!

Hello Angela and the Shymanski family. I hope you are all doing well, and will pray for a speedy recovery. I hope your story travels to parents everywhere and reinforces that it is never too early to teach your children how to get help when it's needed. I am grateful that angels were watching over you that day, and that your little girl was able to get out and get help for her mom and brother. I am not in a position to help financially, although I wish I could. However I will pray for your family, and I will share your story and hope that it reaches others who may be able to help. I know how devastating medical bills can be. I just couldn't read about e what happened and not pass along some words of encouragement. Take things one day at a time, and you will get through it all. I truly believe that. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Know that your story has touched me and I believe you are very blessed. Take care.

I am recovering from a brainstem stroke at 56. It is amazing how your whole life can change in an instant. I like Corinthians 10:13 where we are told that all trials are common to man and Jehovah WILL give you a way out! I am continually amazed at God's course for me- It never seems to be what I thought it would be- usually it is better! I know you can do it! I have found to keep asking my Dr's all of the questions I can think of and keep asking for what I don't know that I should ask. Lately the society has emphasized that when you pray BE SPECIFIC about what you need and want. Dear Jehovah I pray that this family is directed to the best Dr's to help with all of their concerns. I pray that the care they receive is beneficial for each and every one of them. I pray that they all find love joy and laughter again. I pray that their physical, mental, and emotional needs be addressed. I thank you that their trials have brought glory to your name on a large scale. I thank you for all of the love that has been showered on them may it continue the rest of their lives. In Jesus Chris's name Amen.
