African American Scholars comprise 40% of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools total enrollment yet account for 80% of suspensions assigned in the district.
Needless to say children of color are in crisis in Charlotte NC.
We can no longer afford to treat non-traditional issues with traditional solutions.

My name is Beverly J.Jackson, I am a former certified gang specialist who relocated to Charlotte 3 years ago.
I am also the founder of Youth for Chang, an organization I started in Rochester NY in 2010 to provide gang affiliated youth the neccesary tools to transition to a healthier lifestyle.
Boys are called "Goodfellas" and girls are "Determined Divas".
Currently in Charlotte I have continued that work with Youth ages 11-16 at the Belle Johnston Community Center, 2 times per month on Friday evenings from 5:30-8 pm.
At the Belle, the Divas and Goodfellas play basketball, work on life skills and always receive a hearty meal.
The Belle generously donates the space for free and often provide drinks,snacks and paper products. They will also began helping with transportation.
Youth for change is a grassroots effort and has no formal funding stream.
I am currently running out of my personal pocket, support from the Belle and a few local restaurants.
I have established a fiduciary to receive funds .
Youth for Change is currently seeking the following :
1) Program Sponsorship -I am currently spending $250-300 per month to support the program .
2) Life Navigators- Adults who have overcome obstacles in there lives and are willing to share their story and time 2x per month for about 6 hrs total.
3) Professionals who have a workshop, presentation, training or any information benificial to the development of heathy lifestyles for youth; willing to come in on a Friday and share your gift.
4) $13,000 - I currently have 50 tickets to the Smithsonian African American Museum in Washington DC. I have also set up a tour of Howard University. The dates are July 8th-10th and the goal is to take 20, Divas, 20 Goodfellas and 10 chaperones.
