Let me start by telling you about one of the most incredible and joyful friends I have, and her beautiful family. Yolanda and Dolen have been married for 14 years and have 3 funny, thoughtful, and amazing children (Ages 11, 10, and 23). As you can see in the pictures below, Yolanda is dedicated to being a wonderful mother, wife, and friend. She is involved in all of her family's activities from serving as a girl scout leader to PTA secretary, to dancing her booty off at a Kidz Bop Concert, .... She is the hero in her family's life. For those of you who know Yolanda, you know she is an EXTRAORDINARY human being and friend! She is loving, caring, smart, cheerful, a straight shooter, and unbelievably strong! She has a deep love for children, and so many of the children in our community love being with "Miss Wowanda". She was a preschool teacher at Encounter preschool and has served for many years in the church's children ministry sharing her explosive joy with our children. She is the friend that shows up at your front door to cheer you up and will listen and talk to you for hours! As you can see Yolanda has positively impacted and enriched the lives of those who are lucky enough to be in hers.
On August 3rd, 2018, this family’s life was turned upside down when Yolanda was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Despite being told that it is the most aggressive type of breast cancer, Yolanda and Dolen have been determined to do everything they can to fight the cancer. Yolanda underwent 3 cycles of chemotherapy treatments and a complete double mastectomy only to be told in May 2019 that the Ventura County Medical Center could no longer help her, the cancer had spread to her liver and bones. In May 2019 she was denied a trial they had been hopeful in at UCLA but was picked up by City of Hope to begin a new trial. She has been traveling weekly to City of Hope since May and was recently dropped from the trial due to her failing liver and health and was told there is nothing they can do for her and she can no longer be treated there. Even through all of this Yolanda has not lost her sense of humor and positivity.
She is hopeful in alternative treatments. However, these treatments are not covered by insurance and are very expensive. This is Yolanda's last hope!
