My name is Amy.  I am here to tell you about my loving husband Eric. In the spring of 2010 we welcomed the  arrival of our 2nd child; at the same time Eric was diagnosed with Medullary Carcinoma of the thyroid. In June he had surgery to remove his thyroid, parathyroids, and lymph nodes. It was a long and dangerous surgery, but Eric came through very well. After that, our lives went back to normal for almost 3 years. All the while the doctors were keeping an ever watchful eye on his condition. In Jan. of 2014 on of Eric's routine scans revealed a tumor on his rt. lung, and again surgery to remove. This time the lower lobe of his rt. lung along with the tumor and lymph nodes. Eric also healed well after the surgery and this time we did not get 3 years of peace, but 3 months. In April of 2014, he became dizzy and had headaches. Another ct scan showed a tumor in his brain that was causing all the problems. In June, Eric had radiation to shrink the tumor's size. The radiation did stop the growth of the tumor, but not the balance and headache issues. So in  Oct. of 2014, another surgery to remove the brain tumor. This surgery recovery was meet with Eric's usual strength and resiliancy. His recovery began well, but 3 days after coming home from the hospital, I rushed him back after he had a pulmonary embolism from blood clots that formed during and post surgery.  By far the most terrifing day of my life.  He spent 8 days in Intensive Care at Barnes Jewish Hospital. We had hoped that this was it for awhile, but not to be. In Jan. of 2015 we had more bad news. Another routine scan showed a tumor on his pituatary gland. Along with this tumor, the scan found 2 more spots on his left lung and lymph nodes. So now we are faced with multiple spots and, for me, a difficult road. Eric has begun 3 weeks of radiation to treat the pituatary tumor, but we do not yet know what the treatment will be for the rest. Sorry this such a long story, but this is what our family has faced for the last 5 years. The hardest thing for me is to explain to our children, 9 year old Danielle and 5 year old Patrick, that their dad is sick and has to spend time in the hospital again away from them. During all the times in the hospital, Eric has not been able to work very much. hence, we are struggling financially as well. Our family has helped so much, and they continue to be there for us. Without close family, we couldn't have made it through these last few years.
Anything that you can help us with is greatfully appreciated. Thank you so much for reading Eric's story. love and God Bless,

It has been a bit since I have had a chance to update everyone. Eric has really been struggling. He had major issues with the caprelza, and had to abandon it. The scarry thing is that it is one medication down. That is, one less drug that can keep the cancer at bay. One step closer to losing him. That is the hardest part.
We are now on drug #2 called Cometriq. It is also a type of chemo in pill form. Eric started taking it 10 days ago and it has all but made him miserable. He can't eat anything without throwing up. The drug alsohas raised his blood pressure to a dangerous level, so more drugs to combat that. The high blood pressure 141/100 is causing major migrane headaches, which is also making him have an unsettled stomach. The doctors are doning all they can to lessen his symptoms, but I fear that it will only cause more misery.
As his wife, I am heart-broken every time I see him get sick, because I know how miserable that he is. I just wish that I could take his pain away. All I can do is sit and cry!! Eric is my soul mate and I cannot bear to think of life without him, but the pain he is in now is too much. To add insult to injury, the cost of all his medications is mounting, and we have no income right now. I have been doing what I can from home, but it is too hard now with him being so sick.
I am reaching out to you, my friends, family, and wonderful strangers for help so that my 2 children can have another Christmas with their daddy!!!!
Please help us. Thank you so much, Amy

So Cancer Treatment centers in Tulsa was amazing. We spent 3 intense days of testing and labs and talking to doctors. The feeling was so overwhelmingly comforting and the people so friendly that we felt at home. I think we went at the right time. The doctors outlook is so positive and everything we talked about was centered on Eric staying healthy and fighting the cancer. The doctor took him off the chemo drug for now, so that his kidneys have time to recover and I think they want to start him again in october on a lower dose. They also added some different vitamin supplements to help him. The best thing about CTCA is that if you have a question or a problem, there is always someone there to help. You never have to leave a message, a live person helps you anytime day or night. There is something to be said for that level of commitment.
On the more difficult side, this top level care is COSTLY! Our insurance covers most things, but the travel and accommodations are on us. Eric has to go back to CTCA on Oct 6 and 7th to get his kidneys checked and maybe restart the chemo drug. The trip there is covered but we have to find a way to pay for his hotel while he is there.

Since Eric and I have been together, we have faced many hardships and difficult times. But there is one that overshadows even his cancer diagnosis. Eric has been selling some of his more prized possessions to make ends meet for our family, and also saving some money to go Florida to visit family and swim at the beach. Our plan was to leave Sept 14 and spend 2 weeks in Fla. We would return before he has to go back to Tulsa, OK. Everything was packed and we were ready to go last Sat. When Eric went to go and get his cash for the trip, it was gone!!! The jar that he had it in was EMPTY. It had been in there just days before. Our hearts sank and we began frantically searching the house to see if it had been moved. We got a sinking feeling, we had been robbed!!! The curious thing was that only the money, all $2300 of it, was missing. Everything else in the house was not touched. It was then that we realized who had taken the money. It was the very person, someone I used to call a friend, that we were counting on watching our animals while we were gone. We were very comfortable with her and did not lock our house. She knew our schedule and when we were gone is when she came in and cleaned out our vacation money. We know it was her because she is the only person that we allowed in the house and I had paid her from the money jar in times past. I now regret trusting her so much. I confronted her, but she blew it off and made no attempt to even say she did not do it in a manner that was believable. We , of course, called the police, but it was her word against ours. So, now we are at home, my children are sad we are not going and Eric has one more thing to worry about. I just do not understand how someone can be so cold hearted. She got close to us and knew Eric's situation, and still stole from us!!! We are devastated! Words cannot express the profound sadness and anger that we feel as a family. This may be the only chance we will have to travel while Eric feels well enough and she has stolen that. Our children are confused at how their friend's mom could do that. I do not know what or how to explain it to them. All I can say is that some people are cruel.

Eric had a visit with the oncologist last Monday and it did not go well. One of the concerns with the chemo medication that Eric takes is that it can cause problems with your kidneys. It seems that the Caprelza is putting his kidneys in distress. He was told to drink more water and they will check his levels in another two weeks. Caprelza also can cause your heart rate to increase and must be monitored closely. Eric was scheduled to have an EKG in the office on Monday as well. That did not happen. The office is a chaotic disaster and there is only one machine to do the EKG, it was being used for another patient and could not be located for Eric. He was sent down to another floor to have the EKG done. After waiting for an hour in that office after waiting in the oncologists office for at least another hour, Eric left to come back home. He was visibly upset and frustrated when he walked in the house. I felt very bad that I had not gone with him. That night, I was up late watching TV, and I saw a commercial for the Cancer Treatment
centers of America. The thought of what Eric just went through weighed heavily on my mind, to the point of tears, and as I cried I decided to give them a call. A second opinion is just what the doctor didn't order, but I think it is the right thing to do. So long story short, we are going to Tulsa, Oklahoma to visit the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. They are going to evaluate him to see if there is more that can be done to help him battle the cancer. I called and talked to many different people in the process. Evenover the phone, I know that he will be in much better hands than he is right now. I suprized him when I said that he was going for a second opinion, but I don't want to wait until he is told that the medication is not working and that there is nothing more that these doctors can do, before we think about the future. I cannot bear the thought of losing the man I love and the kids don't want to lose their daddy! So now, we are jetting off to Tulsa for a miracle!! Thank you for your continued support and prayers. God bless you all. We will let you know how the trip goes, and what they are going to do.
