Melissa's Education Fund

Donation protected
My name is Melissa Bird. I'm a grandma gloriously turned full time mommy, unexpectedly. Four years ago my son and his girlfriend told us they were going to have a baby. I would have been happier if they were productive members of society. Unfortunately, they both live on the streets addicted to drugs.
My grandson was born 12 weeks early and spent 56 days in the NICU. He was on oxygen and so small, 3 lbs., he couldn't be held longer than 5 minutes a day.  He was born deaf, and every time they removed the oxygen, the Dr's had to revive him. He had a very grim start in this world and his future looked even bleaker.
My husband and I decided to assume responsibility for Lyric as soon as he was released from the hospital. We are the only parents he has ever known. Our son and his girlfriend have since disappeared abandoning this little angel.
Two years ago, we hired an attorney and fought to legally adopt Lyric, joyously we won and he is now our son, with a future.

Before Lyric came into our lives I was attending online classes at the University of Phoenix full time. With a GPA of 3.9 I was working toward an AA degree in Early Education, to get my license as a certified counselor working with children traumatized by abusive situations.
My goal is to earn my Masters in Psychology specializing in Trauma Recovery for children in the foster care systems.

Due to taking care of our sons needs I have had to stop working to stay with him at home. We lost our car since our income decreased so much. And I took too much time off from school to get the adoption settled that my student loan ran out at U of P.  I haven't been able to continue my education right now and don't know when I can without additional help.

U of P is very expensive per year, but the community college, Salt Lake City, is $3,800 a year, more than $7,000 less. So, that is where we're at. I would love to enroll for thisFall semester. The application has to be submitted by August 30, 2017. Tuition is due September 1, 2017.  I need to buy  a simple laptop computer for online classes, which are cheaper. That is between $400 and $450 possibly less. I'm looking for the most economical one. Even if it's used.

I'm asking for $5,000 to cover the above expenses for a one year degree - Assoiates of Science  in Psychology. I have 37 credits of the 61 required for my degree, but unfortunately University of Phoenix won't transfer my credits to Salt Lake City Community College, so it looks like I will be starting all over.

Any money donated is very appreciated, it will help my family and ultimately the children who need a professional to help them. Because of my own childhood experiences and now my grandson/son's, I hope to make a big difference in the lives of other children, those who don't have the resources or loved ones who can help them.
Children are our greatest treasures, keeping them safe and healthy, mentally as well as physically, is our responsibility as a civilized society. Ultimately a fund will be set up to fully cover medical and educational needs for these would be 'lost souls'.

Thank you.
