Yitbareck to College, Ethiopia2US

“Little things make big things happen.” These six simple words by the legendary coach, John Wooden, have the power to change a life, and we are reaching out to you for help.

Ten months ago, 11 students and 3 adults from Holy Family Catholic High School travelled to Ethiopia to share our gifts and talents with orphanages and schools that needed help.

While there, we met a young man, Yitbarek Demise, who had just graduated from St. John the Baptist de LaSalle, one of the schools we served. Yitbarek graduated 1st in his class, and because of his outstanding academics, he was accepted into Honors Programs at 5 U.S. universities. He was offered partial academic scholarships to these schools, and for Yitbarek, this was a dream come true, the culmination of all his hard work.

Unfortunately, Yitbarek soon found out that a partial scholarship wasn’t even enough to cover half of a university education in the U.S. When our group returned home, we contacted LaSalle University, one of the universities that accepted him into their prestigious Honors Program, and after countless meetings and phone calls, LaSalle graciously agreed to pay all of Yitbarek’s tuition costs. He plans to begin this fall and he will study Physics and Mathematics. A little thing on our part did make big things happen.

Now, we are in the final stretch.

In order for Yitbarek to get a student visa, the government requires that he have an account with approximately $14,000, the equivalent of one year’s room and board – in addition to the full tuition provided by LaSalle University. This is an impossible feat for a young man who does not even have an address. Yitbarek’s parents work as laborers, and together they make enough money to “rent” a room that houses their family and three orphaned cousins.

We are reaching out to you in the hope that little things can make big things happen, again.

We have opened an account for Yitbarek and we hope you will prayerfully consider donating to this young man’s promising future. Donations will be held in an account at Wells Fargo until Yitbarek arrives in the U.S. At that point, the funds will be transferred to LaSalle University to be administered by the Financial Aid office. Because the funds will be used for an individual, the donation is not tax deductible.

If you would like to donate, please make your check payable to Chris Parker or to Wells Fargo with “Yitbarek Demise” on the memo line. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ve included some pictures so you can begin to get to know this fine young man. And, thank you in advance for your generosity. Together, we can make something great happen.
