My name is Yara Eid and I grew up in a refugee camp in Gaza, called Al-Bureij, all my life. I was brought up to the sounds of bombs and was not even allowed to walk on the streets alone. I was brought up in fear of what could be coming and fear of when the next war would be. I have lived through three wars in Gaza. I remember when I was fourteen, and how I ran through the Gaza streets with my family, running from certain death. Missiles falling all around us, killing people in front of my eyes. I remember all of the feelings of weakness and vulnerability that I was feeling in those days, and the picture of blood covering the world. I remember how I had to stay in the hospital for a month, my nights spent crying senselessly over the trauma.
Because of all that I have lived through, I was motivated to leave the country and start working towards a real change in the world. I have always felt compelled to fight for peace and justice not only in my home country but also for other countries around the world. I was granted a full scholarship by Cogito Scholarship Foundation to attend the United World College of the Atlantic where my life completely changed.I learned a lot about myself and taught all the people around me about my home country and my people’s continuous suffering. I am honoured to be the first and only student from the Gaza Strip to attend Atlantic College since it was established 56 years ago in 1962. My journey was never easy, I haven’t been home since I left, but what helps me continue my journey is my dream of becoming a peace ambassador.
Unfortunately, Gaza has been under a suffocating blockade for over 10 years now, and the financial situation of all families is very strained. Due to my family’s financial situation and the conditions in Gaza, I am unable to cover the costs of my degree and accommodation.
Since I left Gaza, I started seeing the impact I had on people I lived with, I continued participating in school activities and conferences and succeeded in sharing my story and the story of thousands of people in Gaza who don’t have a voice. I strengthened my English and worked very hard to achieve well academically so I can get accepted into top universities.
Fortunately, I got accepted to some of the top universities in the UK: The University of Edinburgh, The School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS), Warwick and King's College London to study International Relations and Politics. I dream of becoming a peace ambassador and working with the UN as I believe that international influence is essential to achieve peace. And to achieve that dream I need funds to attend university this fall.
Being able to achieve my undergraduate degree in IR and politics would enable me to pursue my goals as I would have a greater education. With a great education and the skills that I would gain, I will be able to start working after I graduate in a humanitarian field and change the sad reality that my people are living through. Hopefully, I will be able to leave a real impact on the world.
The UK universities rarely offer financial aid and scholarships to international students and so it’s extremely difficult to get funds, that’s why I have decided to start a GoFundMe page.
My two top choices are SOAS and Edinburgh. I’m only asking for support for the first year at this point.
Tuition fees for one year at Edinburgh is £18,800 and at SOAS: 16,800£
I have been looking at websites with guidelines living costs can vary between £11000-16000 per year. It is also important not to forget about the visa costs as well as transportation and other costs such as books etc.
Help me make my dream of studying International Relations and Politics at SOAS or Edinburgh come true. I am extremely grateful for everyone who donates anything even if little, your thoughts count too! حصلت على قبولٍ في أربعةٍ جامعاتٍ في المملكة المتّحدة , ولكن دون دعمكم , لن أستطيع الدّراسة في أيٍّ منهنّ. إليكم قصّتي:
اسمي يارا عيد , نشأتُ وقضيت حياتي كلّها في مخيّمٍ للاجئين في غزّة, يسمّى مخيّم البريج. ترعرعت على صوت القنابل, ولم يكن مسموحًا لي أن أسير في الشّوارع وحيدةً. عشت في خوفٍ دائمٍ مما سيأتي, وخوفٍ مستمرٍّ مما ستحمله الحروب القادمة على غزّة. مررت بثلاثة حروبٍ خاضتها غزّة. عندما كنت في الرابعة عشرة, أتذكّر كيف اعتدتُ الركض أنا وعائلتي بين شوارع غزّة, هاربين من موتٍ حتميّ. كانت الصّواريخ تتساقط في كلّ مكانٍ حولنا, وتقتل العشرات من النّاس أمام أعيننا. أذكر شعوري بالضّعف الدّائم والحساسيّة المفرطة في تلك الأيّام, وصورة العالم المشوّه بالدم. أذكر اضطراري للبقاء في المستشفى لشهرٍ كاملٍ, قضيتُ لياليه وأنا أبكي لاشعوريًا من .الصّدمة
وبعد كلّ ما مررتُ خلاله, كنت على أهبة الاستعداد لمغادرة فلسطين وإحداث تغييرٍ في العالم أجمع. لطالما شعرت بواجبٍ يدفعني للكفاح من أجل تحقيق السّلام والعدل ليس فقط لأجل بلادي, ولكن لكافّة الدول حول العالم. حصلت على منحةٍ كاملةٍ بواسطة مؤسسة Cogito Scholarship Foundation لدراسة البكالوريا الدولية في كلية العالم المتحد الأطلسيّة, حيث تغيّرت حياتي تمامًا. تعلّمت الكثير عن نفسي, وعلّمت الكثيرين عن وطني وشعبي ومعاناتهم المستمرّة. حصلت على شرف كون الطّالبة الغزاوية الأولى والوحيدة التي تدرس في الكلية الأطلسيّة منذ نشأتها قبل 56 عامًا في 1962. رحلتي لم تكن بالهيّنة, ولم أعد إلى وطني منذ غادرته قبل عامين, ولكنّ حلمي بأن أكون سفيرةً للسلام يدفعني للمضيّ قدمًا رغم كلّ العقبات والصّعاب.
لسوء الحظّ , غزّة كانت ولا زالت تحت حصارٍ خانقٍ لا يعرف الرّحمة لأكثر من عشرة أعوامٍ, وبالتالي, الوضع الماديّ لعائلتي متوتّرٌ للغاية. وبسبب الوضع المادّي لعائلتي والحصار الخانق على غزّة, لن أستطيع تحمّل تكاليف دراستي الجامعيّة.
منذ غادرت غزّة وأنا أستطيع بوضوحٍ رؤية تأثيري على النّاس المحيطين بي. لقد شاركت في العديد من النشاطات والمؤتمرات المدرسيّة, وقد نجحت بشكلٍ كبيرٍ في مشاركة قصّتي ومعاناة آلافٍ من النّاس العاجزين عن الكلام في غزّة. حسّنت لغتي الإنجليزية وبذلت جهدًا خارقًا كي أحصل على تقديرٍ أكاديميٍّ عالٍ كي أحصل على قبولٍ في جامعاتٍ تعدّ من الأفضل عالميًّا.
لحسنِ الحظّ, مؤخرًا, حصلت على قبولٍ في بعض أهمّ وأفضل الجّامعات في المملكة المتّحدة: مدرسة الدراسات الشرقية والإفريقية في لندن (The School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) ,الكلّية الملكية في لندن (King college London ) , جامعة إدنبرا (Edinburgh )في اسكتلندا, وجامعة وورك(Warwick) في إنجلترا, لدراسة العلاقات الدوليّة والعلوم السياسيّة. أحلم بأن أصير سفيرةً للسلام, وأن أعمل لدى وكالة الأمم المتّحدة, انطلاقًا من إيماني بأنّ التأثير الدوليّ هو المفتاح الرئيسيّ لتحقيق السّلام. ولتحقيقِ هذا الحلم, أحتاج دعمًا ماليًا للدراسة في هذه الجّامعات هذه السّنة.
دراسة العلاقات الدوليّة والعلوم السياسيّة خلال مرحلة الباكالوريوس في إحدى هذه الجّامعات ستمنحني القدرة على تحقيق أحلامي حيث سأحصل على تعليمٍ أفضل. بواسطة هذا التعليم والمهارات التي سأكتسبها, سأكون قادرةً على العمل في مجالٍ يخدم الإنسانيّة بعد التخرّج, وسأغيّر الواقع الحزين الذي يمرّ به النّاس في شتّى أنحاء العالم, والذي مررتُ به أنا شخصيًا. والأهمّ, سأكون قادرةً على إحداثِ تغييرٍ حقيقيٍّ في العالم.
الجامعات في المملكة المتّحدة نادرًا ما يمنحون دعمًا ماليًا للطلاب الدوليّين, ولذلك فإن حصولي على دعمٍ ماليٍ منهم يعتبر أقرب للمستحيل بل هو مستحيل, ولهذا قرّرت بدءَ حملة جمع التمويل هذه.
شخصيًا, خياراتي المفضّلة هي مدرسة الدراسات الشرقية والإفريقية في لندن وجامعة إدنبرا في اسكتلندا. أنا لأ أطلب منكم حتّى الآن سوى تمويلًا يكفيني عامي الدراسيّ الأوّل.
رسوم الدّراسة في مدرسة الدراسات الشرقية والإفريقية هي £16,907, ورسوم الدراسة في جامعة إدنبرا هي £18,800.
من خلال قرائتي للتعليمات على مواقع هذه الجّامعات, تقدّر تكاليف الدراسة في هذه الجامعات بين 11,000 و 16,000 جنيه إسترليني كلّ عام, بالإضافة إلى تكاليف الفيزا والسّفر وغير ذلك من مصاريف (مثل الكتب والقرطاسيّة).
