Yanira's Medical Fund

Yanira was one of the first people at Loyola Law School to make an impression on me. As a 1L, not knowing many people and feeling a bit stressed and self-conscious, there was nothing like her warm smile and "how are you, mama?" every time I'd go to the cafeteria.

This is a common sentiment among Loyola students and alums, we love the Sonia's staff, especially Yani. Students often talk about all the sweet things Yani has done for them: bringing them food during finals, offering advice and words of encouragement, and even talking a few students "off the ledge" when they were on the verge of a breakdown. Yani really cares about students and does whatever she can to be there for us.

A few months ago, Yani was noticeably absent from Sonia's. We were shocked and heartbroken to find out that her husband had been in a terrible motorcycle accident, and was in a coma fighting for his life. Initially, his organs were failing and he had lost complete use of one arm. Now, he has awoken from his coma and is doing a lot better, but the tendons in his arm were torn and he needs a surgery to repair them. Unfortunately, insurance is refusing to cover this surgery, and the hospital won't do the surgery until Yani and Jose pay for it.  If he does not receive the surgery soon, his tendons will heal over while torn and he may permanently lose the use of his arm.

As you can imagine, Yani and Jose are really struggling to make ends meet. They had a two-income household, and Jose had just been hired for a great job at an upscale restaurant - something he had been working towards for a long time. Now, Yani is covering all their expenses on her own, while working fewer hours to take care of her husband's medical and insurance issues. She is even considering moving out of her apartment because she's having a hard time covering the rent and bills.

We are reaching out to the Loyola community to support Yani and her husband. If we can raise $250,000, Yani and Jose may be able to cover the premium for his surgery and save his arm, or at least help with their increasing debt, which is currently at about $500,000. Please donate as much as you can, even if it's just a few dollars. Hopefully, our support will help get Yani and Jose through this difficult time, just as she has helped us get through so many of our own.
