Bev Tumelo TUCSON, AZ
2015 has been a rough year. The collective trauma gripping communities of color across the globe has been tremendous. Our Queer and Trans communities of color continue to suffer at the hands of intolerant imperialist-capitalist states and their dogged pursuit of cruel and profitable "othering". It is extremely palpable here in the politics and policies of the american Southwest.
The question that plagues us daily is so big - "How do we get free?" For us it starts with creating spaces where we can bring together all of our identities. Our efforts have culminated in QTPOCFest Tucson - a free, one day indoor fest that celebrates the QTPOC community in Tucson and its surrounding areas. It will feature performances, workshops, art displays, tabling, live DJs and much more. We are organizing QTPOCFest because our cultural and ethnic identities are, indeed, radical tools of liberation and have long queered sexuality and gender. Where our voices have been overlooked because of pervasive racism, misogyny, transmisogyny, transphobia, and homophobia, QTPOCFest Tucson aims to elevate the experiences and celebrate the artistry and knowledge of Queer and Trans people of color.
We are low-income folks working together to make this happen by saving what we can from our checks so we are asking the QTPOC community and our allies to help us create this space for resource sharing, artistry and liberation. We want to provide *free* food options, funding for the QTPOC artists who share their work, have ramps that facilitate accessibility, and pay for the venue space. We wil also accept donations of skills ,resources, crafting and supplies (i.e. mics, amps, speakers, tables etc.) - both before and on the day of the Fest. Contact us if you have non-monetary donations.
We want to thank everyone who continues to breathe life into QTPOCFest and safe/liberatory spaces. Let’s continue to inspire each other as we demand our right to be free!
