Young Scholars College Tours

Donation protected
We did it! We took 22 Young Scholars on a College Tour! These young people, many whom never flown on an airplane nor ventured out of their communities had the opportunity to experience college first had; to visit where decisions were made about their futures.... the White House! They got to see young people just like them in college, thriving, and successful. We say the "ah ha" moment as they realized that their dream can be a reality. Many returned with more focus on doing well in high school so that they could have the opportunity to go to college. This trip, these young people, made us a staff proud to do what we do. Now that we've returned, we still need to raise the money to finish paying for the trip. Your assistance is greatly needed. Please donate to help us pay for this trip so that we can begin preparing for next year with another group of young people.

See description of below of the Richmond Young Scholars Program.

The Richmond Young Scholars Program (a subsidiary of Richmond Police Activities League) located in Richmond, CA, was created as a program to help increase the number of underrepresented students who are eligible for college admission.   We strongly believe that all hard working students who have a strong belief in his/her academic abilities be afforded the opportunity to attend and graduate from college.

None of the students participating in the Richmond Young Scholars College Tour have traveled to Washington D.C., and many have never left the West Coast. This experience will have a transformative impact in the lives of our youth by raising their awareness of college, broadening their understanding of our nation, increasing their exposure to our political process, and, most importantly, expanding their personal goals and aspirations. Additionally, the tour will improve the quality of life in our local communities by helping to create a strong college-going culture in Richmond.

Our inaugural group of 22 Richmond students  went to Washington D.C. from April 1, 2016 through April 7, 2016, where we visit the White House, several colleges and universities, and multiple historical sites.   Your donations provided one student the opportunity to participate in the Scholars College Tour, which includes visits to the White House, several colleges and universities, and multiple historical sites in the Washington D.C. area.

We are trying to reach our goal of $5,000 by July 1, 2016.  Fed. Tax I.D. # 94-2826455.

On behalf of the Richmond Young Scholars, we thank you for your consideration of this request and your investment in our community’s most valuable resource – the lives of our children.

Sincerely,

Larry L. Lewis, Committee Chair
