Hello everyone,
My name is Dylan Holman and I am a Biomedical Sciences major at Liberty University. My family and I have a passion for the people of Nicaragua and we love to serve them any way we can.
There is a strange disease going around in Nicaragua called "The Chronic Kidney Disease". This disease has killed over 20,000 people and in the last two decades and is only getting worse and more common. The village we serve in has been named the land of the widows because it is killing so many fathers and has now started to take women and children. The government has not stepped in, and there are few people trying to figure out how and where this disease comes from. The disease eventually causes total kidney failure and the people of Nicaragua cannot afford the kind of medical treatment to get a new kidney.
I have started a team of microbiologists, forensics students, public health students, and premed students to research this strange disease at Liberty University. My team will work alongside each other to figure out where the disease originates, can it be passed down to children through genes, and why it is most common in men. We will be analyzing the water the people drink as well as taking dna samples from family members and sequence the DNA to search for an unknown gene to see if it is passed down. Sugar cane is a large industry in the town of Chichigalpa so we will also look at the pesticide used on the cane and review its effect on kidneys.
Thank you for your help. We at Liberty University are excited to start this project in August of 2017. With your donation it will go towards paying for sterile sample equipment and also pay for a 3 day trip to Chichigalpa, the hotspot of the disease, to take all the samples we need in preparation for this project. With your help we will work very hard with a lot of specialists to find the missing answers of this disease that has and is taking so many lives.
