Together for Development is the UWC Short Course in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland).

We believe young people have the ability and passion to change the world. This course will bring together 60 participants from around the world to critically engage with the concept of development and deeply understand the issues involved. Above all, we will empower them to become effective, empathetic change makers.

The course will be held from August 18, 2019 to August 31 ,2019 at the Waterford Kamhlaba United World College.

We want to enable a truly diverse group of exceptional participants to join us, irrespective of their ability to pay.  And we need your help to make this happen! We are therefore fundraising for scholarships and course activities.

Being in eSwatini allows participants to engage on- and off-campus with the reality of a developing country. Although one of the smallest African countries, it is not lacking in diversity. From mountains to lowlands, cities to nature reserves, course participants will engage with all the country has to offer. Local community interaction & service are a key part of the curriculum, and all participants will develop a project they can implement in their own communities.

Topics we will look at in-depth include development theory, social entrepreneurship, environment & sustainability, arts & creativity, youth activism, gender equality and education. In the words of former participants, this course is an opportunity to "be more aware of the greater world community I am part of”. Based on our past experience, we are convinced that all participants will leave with the inspiration, ideas and skills they need to make a difference in their communities.

The course will be held at the is facilitated by a diverse and professional team from around the world, most of whom are alumni of UWC schools or short courses themselves. In addition to academic expertise, they also have on-the-ground experience working in development.

What is UWC?

UWC (United World Colleges) is a global education movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

UWC short courses are experiential and immersive experiences, bringing together 30 – 60 young people from different backgrounds.

What We Need & What You Get

More than 30 young people have already applied to be part of this experience, but to enable a truly diverse group of exceptional participants to join us, we need additional funding for scholarships - and that is where you come in.

When you give, you’re supporting incredible young change-makers acquire the skills to make a difference. In addition, we will post regular blogs throughout the course and send out newsletters. Donors sponsoring a scholarship will also receive a thank you letter from the participant who they sponsored.

Here is an overview of what your donation would allow us to achieve:

$75 - Sponsor a theme day
This would sponsor a theme day during the course, for example on sustainable development & climate change, economic development or on human rights.

$100 - Sponsor a community stay
This would allow us to equip one of our groups with the materials they need to make a contribution that is relevant to their host community during their community stay

$150 - Eswatini scholarship
This would allow a participant from Eswatini to attend the course. The donation would be matched by Waterford Kamhlaba UWC of Southern Africa.

$300 - Southern Africa scholarship
With your support of a scholarship , you help us spread the short course experience throughout Southern Africa.

$500 - Asia/Latin America scholarship
It is important to include participants from other non-African countries in the Global South, but their journeys are far and tickets are expensive. With your support, their participation can become a reality.

So donate now to give a unique opportunity to future change makers!

The course is volunteer run so 100% of the funds raised go towards towards scholarships and course activities.

Meet one of the potential participants, who we are fundraising for:

José is a 19-year-old scientist and university student from Cordoba, Argentina, seeking to secure a sustainable society.
A health scare when he was 12 years old left him determined to use his life to make a difference to the community he lives in and to improve the world. Coming from an impoverished background, this journey has not been easy.
He is passionate about topics such as renewable energy, climate change and youth empowerment. He has taken part in a range of scientific camps, national scientific Olympiads, scholarships and contests and has received wide recognition for setting up a renewable energy project called “Biogas” at his high school. He’s currently part of the “Social Commitment” Program at his university.
He hopes to share his passion and knowledge of renewable energy and community engagement with the participants and facilitators. He also hopes to get to know people from around the world and learn more about activism, rights, arts and how to further his personal development and the causes he cares most about.
