XL workbook for cryptocurrency data

$3,200 goal

My name is Andrew Mackinnon.  I'd like to raise $3,200 in order to buy a van so I can start a lawn mowing business.

If you donate $10 or more, I'll send you a link from which you can download a copy of the Excel workbook I created to quickly and automatically format all of the data on the CoinMarketCap.com website for all of the 1,500 plus cryptocurrencies listed on that website.  This workbook enables you to then analyse this data using the filter and sort functions in this workbook that I’ve also automated.  I'll also send you a link from which you can download a copy of the easy to follow instructions for using this Excel workbook in PDF file format.

There are more than 1,500 cryptocurrencies listed on the cryptocurrency authority website CoinMarketCap.com.  Many of these are recently listed cryptocurrencies with very low prices that have already displayed strong price growth and are therefore attractive to buy.

But how do you comfortably analyse the wealth of data that’s available on CoinMarketCap.com?  It lists the following information for every cryptocurrency on its website, unless that information isn’t currently available:

> Name
> Symbol
> Rank by Market Capitalization in USD
> Price in USD
> Price in BTC
> 24 Hour Volume in USD
> Market Capitalization in USD
> Available Supply
> Total Supply
> Maximum Supply
> Percentage Change in Price Over the Previous Hour
> Percentage Change in Price Over the Previous 24 Hours
> Percentage Change in Price Over the Previous 7 Days
> Date and Time the Data Was Last Updated

I’ve developed a Microsoft Excel workbook to obtain the latest data available from CoinMarketCap.com for all 1,500 plus cryptocurrencies listed on the website and present all of that information in a clear, easily-comprehensible format.  Analysing this data is then just a matter of sorting it and filtering it using these features which are available in Excel.  This workbook is built to process, display and analyse the data from CoinMarketCap.com associated with a maximum of 3,000 cryptocurrencies.

Here's the final format of this data obtained from CoinMarketCap.com, sorted by "Rank By Market Cap" (ie. market capitalization) in ascending order:

As the following two images show, the hidden additional columns, H, I and Q, R,  contain more information about the supply of each cryptocurrency, as well as the date and time that the data was generated on CoinMarketCap.com:

As the following image indicates, you can scroll through the data for all 1,500 plus cryptocurrencies currently listed on CoinMarketCap.com using this workbook.

The cryptocurrencies on CoinMarketCap.com with the lowest market capitalizations often have missing data, shown in the following image as blank spaces, but most of the cryptocurrencies have data in all of the columns.

I have more than 12 years experience developing Microsoft Excel workbooks, including extensive experience programming them to automate routine tasks using Microsoft VBA code (Visual Basic for Applications), more widely known as “Excel macros”.

This workbook was developed using Microsoft Excel 2002 in the .xls file format so that it’s suitable to be used with any version of Excel from Excel 2002 onwards.

Users of Microsoft Excel 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016 can save this .xls file to another file in .xlsm file format, which is the Excel file format for these versions of Excel that’s designed to facilitate the proper functioning of VBA code (or “Excel macros”) within an Excel workbook.

Please note that, at this point in time, this workbook is only suitable for users of a Microsoft Windows operating system.

This is a professionally-developed workbook that is easy to use and easy to read.  Most of the routine tasks required to process and analyse this data have been automated using VBA code written into this workbook.  Even the processes of sorting and filtering the data have been automated with “Sort Data” and “Filter Data” buttons to remove as much of the manual effort involved as possible.

Here's the VBA code that drives the "Filter Data" button at the top of the "Cryptocurrency Data - Output" worksheet:

The only routine task that hasn’t been automated is the manual transfer of the latest available data from CoinMarketCap.com into this Excel workbook, which is a very simple task that you can literally do in less than 60 seconds.

As a result of VBA code, it takes a maximum of 5 seconds to process this data and present this data in the table format of the “Cryptocurrency Data – Output” worksheet.  All you have to do is click on the “Process Data” button near the top of the “Cryptocurrency Data – Input” worksheet.  Here's an image of that worksheet:

Sorting the data is as simple as clicking the “Sort Data” button at the top of the “Cryptocurrency Data – Output” worksheet, which causes all of the data to be selected and the Excel “Sort” dialogue box to appear.  You can then select the column heading names that you want to use to sort the data and the order in which you want to sort those columns, whether “Ascending” or “Descending”.

Filtering the data is similarly as simple as clicking the “Filter Data” button at the top of the “Cryptocurrency Data – Output” worksheet, which causes the data to be filtered according to any criteria that you’ve typed into the blue-colored cells in Row “7” of this worksheet.

Here's an example of a simple filter whereby the only cryptocurrencies that appear are those for which their 24 hour trading volume as a percentage of their market capitalization is greater than or equal to 2%:

You can apply the following criteria to find cryptocurrencies that are currently exhibiting strong price growth:

A useful way to sort the results produced by applying the criteria above is to sort by “% 24 Hour Volume” in descending order, as shown in the following image:

You can then investigate the cryptocurrencies that remain visible in the “Cryptocurrency Data – Output” worksheet as a result of the filtering process by starting from the top with the cryptocurrency having the highest “% 24 Hour Volume”.

(The higher this percentage, the greater the possible movement in the price of the cryptocurrency in the near future.  This percentage is a measure of the interest of cryptocurrency traders in the cryptocurrency it relates to.  The higher this percentage, the more interest from traders there is in the cryptocurrency.)

An example of a cryptocurrency that appears as a result of applying the criteria above is Qtum.  You can find out more information about Qtum by looking this cryptocurrency up on the CoinMarketCap.com website and visiting the following web page:

You can view the price charts for Qtum in different time frames on this web page on the “Charts” tab, visit the website for Qtum from a link on this web page to find out more about this cryptocurrency and also find out where you can buy Qtum on the “Markets” tab if it’s an attractive prospect to you.

This workbook comes with professionally-written instructions of 19 pages in length in .pdf file format. These include clear instructions on how to manually transfer the latest available data from CoinMarketCap.com into this workbook, which literally takes less than 60 seconds, and how to carry out the different automated functions of this workbook.  They also include detailed instructions on how to replicate these automated functions manually as a backup if necessary.  For example, processing the cryptocurrency data from CoinMarketCap.com within the workbook manually, instead of automatically using the “Process Data” button, takes a maximum of 2 minutes as opposed to a maximum of 5 seconds.

After receiving your donation of $10 or more, I’ll message you via GoFundMe with the download links for the following two files within 24 hours:

CoinMarketCap - Cryptocurrency Data - Original.xls  (9.4 MB in size)

CoinMarketCap – Cryptocurrency Data – Instructions.pdf  (322 kB in size)

You’re welcome to message me back with any questions.

Thanks a lot!
