Megaman 64 Prototype Cart

Video game preservation is a niche, yet delicate field of digital archeology. In an era were digital content is constantly created and can very easily be lost forever, there are enthusiasts who desire for games not to be lost or forgotten in time. These folks dive into the prototypical forms of their favorite games to better understand the development history of them. Game prototypes often contain content at their rudimentary stage that haven't taken their final forms yet, if they make to the final draft at all or even make it to store shelves. The spectrum of this can range from minor to extreme.

A work-in-progress build of Mega Man 64 has surfaced by a user on AssemblerGames, a site dedicated to documenting and preserving game-related content. Mega Man 64, a Nintendo 64 port of the highly-regarded PlayStation Capcom-classic Mega Man Legends, is known for the rushed, sketchy condition that it plays as. We feel that this prototype is meritable for preservation to understand the development of the port and to document the game for research.

Our goal for this fundraiser is to generate enough funds to purchase this prototype cartridge. These gaming relics are not common and the value of them extends any dollar amount. We feel that the asking amount is an appropriate estimation of the prototypes value not only for what it offers but also to compete with other game enthusiast looking to collect this piece of Mega Man-brand, and video game, history.
These kinds of goods get snagged quickly and end up never seeing the light of day again (sometimes lost, damaged, resold, etc). By offering your financial assistance, you're contributing to the effort of preserving a piece of video game history. The prototype once obtained, will be in the hands of experienced, preservation experts and be promptly dumped online in the form of a playable ROM for future generations to dissect, document and enjoy.
We hope that you join us in the effort of preserving this prototype.
