In Memory of Baby Azlynn Mia

It all began with a text in April from my brother, a picture of a pregnancy test, it was positive. It was official, my little brother, Joey was going to become a father for the first time with his long time girlfriend, Alex. We were (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles) full of anticipation. Her due date was December 27, 2015. A gender reveal party was soon to follow the pregnancy announcement. "It's a girl!" balloons popped out of a neatly wrapped box. We were all thrilled. Alex and Joey started preparing. They moved into their first home together and prepped the babies beautiful nursery. Never have I seen a couple so ready to have and hold their precious new baby. Her name above the crib on the wall, Azlynn - in wooden handmade, hand painted letters, coordinated with the nursery theme - peacock. They even had a Christmas gift wrapped with teddy bear paper, just incase she came to them before Christmas. They. Were. Ready.
On December 15, my brother asked me to take him to the Ottawa General Hospital. I kept prying, "baby? Is she here? Is baby on the way??" There was long moment of silence. Joey had told me they lost her. After what would have been one of Alex's last prenatal appointments, they had confirmation of a parents worst fear; that doctors and nurses couldn't find her heart beat.
After arriving at the hospital, Alex and Joey were instructed that she would have to be induced to give birth to their deceased first born. After hours of labour, Azlynn Mia came out weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces. She was perfect.
We (Joey, Alex, grandparents and aunts and uncles) held her, we rocked her, we kissed her, we cried for her, we talked to her and we told her how much we loved her. We knew we would have to leave the hospital without her. She needed to have an autopsy. After all, Alex's last week ultrasound told no story of impending death or unforeseen circumstance.
Hearts everywhere break for them, they will need all the loving, caring support they can get. Joey and Alex have some time off of work to grieve and support each other through this. Unfortunately, the bills won't stop coming in and life around them will continue on. They will be in need of financial help until they can get back on their feet, so-to-speak, for food, rent, toiletries and so on.
