Hello! My name is Desiree London and it is with great excitement for me to say that I've been accepted to my dream school, the University of Chicago. I'm really looking forward to studying Environmental Science so I can hopefully make a difference in helping our world in the future. Unfortunately, it is not certain that I will be able to enroll due to my family's financial needs, and I'd deeply appreciate any and all help! Throughout high school, I've maintained a 4.2 average GPA and dedicated time to extracurriculars such as track & field, speech team, and the Illinois YMCA Youth &  Government program. In addition, I've been working as a waitress for nearly two years now at a small, family friend run Vietnamese cuisine restaurant. In 2016 both of my parents lost their jobs within months of each other and although my dad eventually found employment within a few months, my mom was unemployed for a whole year before being employed at a startup company where her salary is a lot less than her previous job. Now, both of my parents are working, but struggling to support my older sister's 3rd year in college, my brother's start of high school, and me beginning my secondary education. The financial issue that I've encountered stems from my dad's recent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis a few months ago. He's been hospitalized three times for weeks at a time since the start of this year, and doctors are still looking for a treatment that effectively minimizes the symptoms--as there is no cure. Due to his condition, he is off on sick leave since February. With this, his earnings have not been able to meet our financial needs. The costs for my freshman year at U of Chicago is a staggering $80k and though the institution has been very generous with grants, there is a gap of $30k that we cannot afford. This first year is particularly expensive because the University requires residency on campus for all freshman. For my remaining three years, I plan on commuting from my home to the University to eliminate the room & board fees. In addition to the provided work-study and summer job opportunities, I'll also be able to borrow more from federal loans after my freshman year. Getting accepted into the University of Chicago is a real dream come true, and I'm really hoping that with the help of the GoFundMe community, my family can work out the financial challenges so I can further pursue my education without the risk of losing this incredible opportunity. Thank you for your time and generosity!
