Over the holidays we found out that our mother Rosie Zollo has stage IV Ovarian Cancer. Specifically she was diagnosed with Primary Peritoneal Cancer, a rare form of ovarian cancer that can occur post-hysterectomy or outside the ovaries.
As many of you know, Rosie has a history of cancer. She had breast cancer at 36, and has undergone both a mastectomy and hysterectomy in recent years as a precaution. And now, at 62 she has developed PPC. As is typical with ovarian, the cancer was discovered late stage. On December 20th she underwent surgery at her hometown hospital in Clovis, NM. The surgeon removed a large mass blocking her intestine as well as many small tumors that had formed in her abdomen. As a result of the late stage diagnosis she had to have part of her colon and intestine removed and has to use a colostomy bag.
We are attempting to make up for lost time here, and want to fight this cancer on many levels. Our goal in setting up this page is for help covering everything her insurance does not: alternative healing methods, vitamins and supplements, organic and high quality food, gas for travel, even a local meal prep service to cook her healthy meals on days she doesn’t have the energy because of chemo.
On January 29th she is scheduled to begin chemo with the nearest Gynecologic Oncologist in Albuquerque, NM, a 3.5 hour drive she will need to make every 3 weeks over the next 6 months.
For anybody who knows Rosie, she is a bright and generous person always willing to help and serve others. There’s much to learn from her generosity and compassion. She is the type of person who is there for others when they are in their darkest hour, and now is the time for her to call upon us for help.
