Delta Burke (& KD Lang's) Med Fund

Delta Burke is a tiny kitten with a big heart, a loud purr, and a broken little body.

Here is her story.

The story actually begins years before Delta Burke the kitten was ever around. You see, years ago, Andi's mom (Jackie) and aunt (Crystal) bought their childhood home from auction when grandma passed and trusted a family member to rent it and take care of it. As it turns out, he wasn't very trustworthy.

When Andi's mom passed away in October, Andi & others took on the responsibility of "fixing" this house, which now needed a complete remodel from years of neglect and destruction. In Spring of 2015, Andi & Cat began taking weekend trips to Dallas, and the house remodeling project in Redneckville became a regular thing.

On May 2, two feral kittens were found at the Dallas house, and Andi & Cat trapped them and took them back to Chapel Hill to adopt them into new lives of luxury. An orphaned kitten found in Durham joined them a week later. On May 23rd, Andi & Cat returned to Dallas, only to find the remaining kittens from that litter, alive and mean, under the neighbor's house. After crawling into the crawlspace and wasting hours of remodel time, the remaining 7 were trapped.

Did the fun stop there? Oh no it did NOT. Crystal (remember her from earlier?) announced that she too had feral kittens living in her carport down the road that needed help. So did Andi & Cat say, no way, we already have 10 kittens and leave them there to be someone else's problem? No, sadly they did not.

And that is where Delta Burke was discovered.

The 2 kittens in Aunt Crystal's carport were around 4 weeks old and very wild. DB was the last one trapped and she REALLY hated people. She had a big, round belly on tiny legs that we assumed was due to parasites. She didn't seem to have much of a personality compared to the others, but we thought it was just hate and that she might open up in time.

The first few days were composed of building a kitten kingdom and cleaning poop. Then handling and taming began. Delta Burke was one of the least trusting naturally, so when they were given time outside of the kitten kingdom, she would disappear under the chest and never return. Slowly, she began sitting in the room without hiding, but would not come close.

As the days went on and life with 12 kittens became routine, it became more and more obvious that Delta Burke was just not right. She didn't play with the other kittens. Her round belly would not go away despite wormer. She hunched like a gargoyle and had diarrhea that just would not go away.

In time, the weird, angry kitten perched closer and closer to us during free time. We had to bathe her pretty regularly from the diarrhea, so she finally got used to us touching her. Her distrust faded and was replaced by the most giant purrs and love. But her poor body remained unchanged...

Starting in early June, Delta Burke began having no control of her bowels. She has fecal leakage most of the time, and the skin on her feet and entire back end is raw and irritated from the constant wetness. Her back-end hair is falling out and frequently comes off on your finger as you put ointment on to soothe her poor skin. She has fallen into a diabetic-type shock twice and had to be rushed to the vet for immediate IV glucose to revive her. Her little body is wearing out. But her purr is strong. And the love in her eyes is constant. She needs bloodwork, tests, and a miracle.

We do not know what all will be needed or if she can even be saved at all. She is mentally off and will never be normal, but we want to give her a chance at a normal life if it's possible. We cannot afford to do so alone anymore. We are hoping to raise enough money to cover her medical bills, and we would love to find hopeful news, but that is obviously not guaranteed.

If Delta Burke does not make it through this journey, or if more is raised than is needed for her, excess funds will go toward the other kittens and rescue animals that are in our care. If she does make it, she will be the best cat in the world.
