PLEASE HELP US HELP WELLAND!!

I'm not quite sure how to say all this, but here goes. My name is Roland Calamatta, the oldest of four boys. On the night of May 23, 2015 my brother Welland was attacked while he was spending time with one of his friends. He went to Mississauga to meet his friend at a party and our lives haven't been the same since. Welland was assaulted, the assailant was unprovoked. It was a complete misunderstanding; a case of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was struck in the temple and completely lost consciousness instantly. As a result he was not able to brace himself against the impact that occured. Wellands head violently struck the concrete sidewalk and according to witnesses, the assailant continued to attack him, while unconscious. Luckily for Welland people from the party realized what was happening and intervened. The assailant fled the scene and two lovely girls assessed Wellands condition and realized that he required immediate medical attention due to the bleeding from his ears caused by the head injury and called 911. For these women we are eternally grateful. Had it not been for their quick thinking and first aid training, my brother might not be with us today. The ambulance arrived at the scene and took Welland to Credit Valley hospital in Mississauga. He was taken immediately for a CT scan which indicated severe brain hemorrhaging which led him to be air lifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto for emergency surgery. They needed to stop the hemmorrhaging by removing the bone flap on the left side of his skull and cauterizing the damaged vessels in the brain. He was put on a ventilator and his neck was put into traction. The swelling that occured after the bone flap was removed was hard to fathom. After surgery the doctor informed us that even if he pulled through all this, he would never be the same. At that point we were grieving him and had lost all hope. All of the people who love Welland rallied behind him. Essentially our lives ground to a halt. Everyone frantically flew and drove in from all over the place immediately upon hearing the news to be by his side. Family is everything to us. Even though we all have our own lives, we still come together when it matters.

We love our Welland!

Here is where we begin our story... Our four weeks of hell on earth, our glimmers of hope and the never ending quest for a glimpse of that famous smile. As the days went on, we received constant updates, CT scans, intercranial pressure fluctuations, fevers, pneumonia, the coming and goings of tragic events that is the life of Sunnybrook Critical Care Unit, sleeping on hospital chairs and floors, the heart ache.
We were told so many wonderful heartpulling comments about how he is the toughest of us all, and the most stubborn. We just needed to see that smile. Welland is a fighter. We take comfort in the slow but determined progress. As of tomorrow it will be four weeks to the day.

Please help me, help my brother!

I really wish you knew my brother. Welland was always a jack of all trades. Before all of this happened Welland was very much a contributing member of society. He always gave where he could and helped anyone whenever the opportunity presented itself. He is the kind of man, that would give you a helping hand with anything, no matter what. He loves his friends, family, and his two dogs Ziggy and Scotty more than anything in this world. The doctors have given us an outlook that appears to be a lengthy road of recovery that entails many hospital ward transfers, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and things that even the doctors can't foresee. As such it will be a long time before Welland is even remotely able to be a contributing member of society again. His friends and family will be by his side every step of the way as he fights his way back. We have great hope that Welland will recover fully and return to his old self and that he will be able to resume his life where he left off. But for now he needs all the help he can get. Welland is in need of long term care while he recovers and his medical and personal expenses continue to grow. So this is why I am posting my very first and hopefully last fundraiser for my wonderful brother Welland. Please help in any way that you can and know that you are helping somebody that has always been too proud to ask for anybody for help. Thank you so very much for your contribution. Even if you can't spare a dime, please keep him in your thought and prayers. We could use all the positivity that we can get.
