Mia's Fund

Mia Blount is an 11 year old girl in the 6th grade who is currently in remission from bone cancer and is in need of additional surgery in order to replace a metal rod in her leg that she has outgrown.  The doctor originally used the metal rod to replace her cancerous femur, but now that leg is 2 inches shorter than the other.  While her school community has been very supportive of Mia's condition, her days are very difficult while she tries to get around on crutches and smile through the pain.  This page is set up on behalf of Mia's mom, Shameeka Williams, who will be receiving all of the funds raised.  Shameeka is a native New Yorker and moved to Charlotte in 2010.  Mia was diagnosed with the bone cancer while in Charlotte, and most of her doctors are in Charlotte.  However, Mia's family (mom and 2 siblings) had to move back to New York after Shameeka lost her job in Charlotte and then could no longer afford housing.  The family is currently residing in a one room shelter in Brooklyn, NY.  Shameeka is currently traveling back and forth between New York City and Charlotte to seek employment in hopes of moving her family back down south. Mom will use the funds to assist with getting the family out of the shelter system and moving back down south where Mia can return to the hospital and doctors she is familiar with.  The environment will be more conducive to her healing process. The funds will also assist the family with any expenses (i.e. food, clothing, housing, travel, or medical expenses) associated with the surgery and the healing Mia will need.  Mia's story has been shared via the NY Daily News and CBS 2 news.
