My name is Alexandra. I'm a single mother of 5 amazing children aged 2, 7, 13, 15 and 20.
In 2009 I moved to Melbourne with my family to access better medical care for my 15 year old son who has Cerebral Palsy, Microcephaly and Global Developmental Delay. My beautiful boy requires a high level of care so getting work isn’t so easy.
I absolutely want to work and since moving to Melbourne I have applied for multiple jobs, but because I’ve spent most of my working life investing in my children the kind of work available to me is low paid, very insecure and won’t pay enough to meet the needs of my family. Also, as soon as employers hear I have a high needs child and might need to leave at the drop of a hat if his school calls, doors start slamming shut.
I’m not someone who lets life’s challenges stop me from moving forward however, and for the last two years I’ve been working at starting my own printing and signage business making art decals and other related products.
I’ve had a lot of interest in my designs; in fact I’ve been a little overwhelmed by demand. I believe in my products and use only the highest quality materials so they will last. I also have the determination, drive, desire, perseverance and above all, heart to make this business work. The trouble is most people want the designs BIG and my current equipment simply can’t accommodate this.
The machine I need is a printer / cutter called a Roland VS 540i With this machine I will be able to create high quality designs and will mean I won’t need to outsource my work to contractors. It will also offer me the opportunity to triple my output and potentially make a real living for me and my family.
My biggest problem however is the machine costs $13,000 secondhand and with the money I receive from the government to support my kids there’s nothing left over at the end of the week to even start saving for this machine. I’ve been to all the banks and financial institutions and despite all of them agreeing my business plan is brilliant, none will lend money to a single mum, with no credit history and four children to support.
That’s why I’m asking for your help to raise the money I need to buy the machine I need to really get my business off the ground. Every donation makes a difference and will get me closer to making my dream of being able to support my family come true..
Paying it forward
Because I believe making sure the good others do for me continues to do good for others, once my business is up and running and turning a genuine profit I intend to support other struggling families start their own business. I intend to support 5 families by providing each of them with a kit, which will contain a heat press, small vinyl cutter and some vinyl / heat transfers to the value of $1400 so they too can potentially start their own home based business.
