GARN- Supporting Equality in Galway

Donation protected
The Galway Anti Racism Network is a grassroots community group committed to promoting racial equality and social justice. We are not tied to any political party or organisation, but work with other groups that share our goals. We believe that everyone deserves the same respect and rights regardless of origin, ethnicity, appearance or belief system. we want to strengthen the campaign against racism both locally and internationally. And we want to gather people together to get the voice of change heard.

In the two and a half years since we were formed, we have organised over 50 public events which have challenged racism and promoted a message of equality and diversity. From art exhibitions to public meetings, fashion shows to national demonstrations, aerial photos to cooking events...our ever-changing and ever-growing membership has committed itself to delivering events that have legacy and wide public support. In that vein, in a year where it was confirmed that our city was the most multicultural city in the country, we want to celebrate that and promote a message that challenges any notion of discrimination.

We're a grassroots group with no funding. The majority of our events have been put in place by fundraising through table quizzes and coffee mornings, along with donations from trade unions and other community groups. For the three events we have put on over the next month we've realised we have to look further for funds. This is our appeal to you.

- On Friday the 23rd of November at 7pm, we will be illuminating the Spanish Arch in red light for Wear Red Day. People coming from both Quay Street and the West End will see the arch illuminated in red light, identifying it as a landmark for equality in the city.

Our expenses here are having some qualified to do the illuminating and the rent of the equipment, as well as online promotion of the event.

- On Monday the 26th of November at 7pm in the Galway Arts Centre, we are hosting an event called Voices from the Margins - Challenging Inequality #homesforall. The housing crisis is affecting us all in different ways. That sense of a common suffering is lost in an atmosphere where blame is laid at the door of certain groups. This meeting will give be a platform for voices of those experiencing homelessness. It will promote solidarity across communities to take action against inequalities. Our voices will be united in calling for an end to the housing and accommodation crisis.

- From Monday the 3rd of December to Friday the 14th of December, GARN are hosting the #IamIrish photo exhibition in the Galway Arts Centre. Inspired by a persisting lack of representation of the Black Irish experience, Lorraine Maher launched the project #IAmIrish to celebrate Mixed race Irish people and to question the concept of ‘Irishness’ and what an authentic Irish identity means for Irish communities today. There will be a launch event on Friday the 7th of December and a Panel Discussion on Thursday the 13th of December.

Our expenses here are transporting and insuring the exhibition from Dublin to Galway. We have to cover the costs of flights, bus trips and accommodation for guest speakers for the panel discussion. We have to promote the event online and print materials for the launch and the two weeks that the exhibition is on display.

We know that these events will have a longstanding legacy in a city that is experiencing change. It's hard to put in words how grateful we will be to see these events organised in the best way possible, and done with respect and dignity. We want to thank anyone in advance who can afford to give us a few euro. We know how hard it is to budget for donations like this in such economically trying times. Our promise to you will be that it will be worth every cent.

Thank you x
