Writerly Cultural Exchange Fund

Donation protected
Every year, GrubStreet’s the Muse and the Marketplace Conference offers a place for writers at all stages to grow and learn about their craft and the publishing industry. Located in Boston, the Muse welcomes writers from all over the country and—increasingly—the world. For the first time, the sense of unity and inclusion fostered at the conference has been disrupted. This year, after the first travel ban was issued, two students cancelled their plans to come to the Muse. Though they live in countries NOT covered by the travel ban—Nigeria and Turkey—the ban, and the rhetoric surrounding it, made them feel unsafe and worried about traveling.

Upon hearing this, GrubStreet immediately offered to help raise money to cover their travel, hotel expenditures, and tuition and to meet them at the airport. We want them to know that they are WELCOME here. Readers and writers like you can help us make good on this promise.

By contributing to this fund, you will show these students, and the international community, that as Americans we believe in the open exchange of information, culture, and people. Sharing stories and reading widely connects us in powerful ways, builds empathy and understanding, and makes the world more democratic and ultimately, safer.

Through a generous donation, you will ensure that these two writers come to America to study and connect—an important experience that they’ve described in their own words:

“What makes the American cultural landscape so important for so many people across the globe is its one-of-a-kind heterogeneity -- which must never be savaged, which must be defended, by all of us. (Because the world would not be the same without it; it would be a colder, less brilliant, less safe place.)"

“…the Muse 2017 Conference will be the perfect opportunity which will equip me with the knowledge to improve on methodologies to bridge the gap in the writing industry in Nigeria, improve on my writing skills, and build collaborations that will inspire change for upcoming writers in Nigeria and across Africa."

We hope we can count on you to help raise $5,000. By making a contribution of any size, you will make a real difference.
