The Wright Reasons

Dylan Wright is a 23 year old singer/songwriter from Gymea who has been doing his part to help those in need while also raising money for charities from a very young age. He started off by shaving his head for the Worlds Greatest Shave at only 6 years of age, Dylan then started reading books for the MS readathon and won many prizes for raising such a large amounts of money at such a young age. From high school to present Dylan has participated in the live below the line challenge, 40 hour famine and Relay for life, and while most school leavers chose to finish year 12 with a week or two of partying, Dylan chose to go to Arnhem land to help the local community learn English and music instead of going on Schoolies.

Dylan’s mother Anne was his motivation for everything he did. Anne was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the early 90’s and for a long time got by with a walking stick, having a 'bad day' every now and then. In 2009 she was placed in an induced coma over Easter after dealing with depression for a number of years and attempting to end her life, resulting in having to be reliant on her wheelchair from here on in meaning Dylan became her main carer when he was only 16 years old. Doing all the house hold tasks, while taking Annie to all her appointments, along with trying to study for his School Certificate was a large change in his life.

A few years passed and our Annie started to deteriorate and in November 2013 she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a rare type of Leukaemia found mainly in children and men. Anne had always joked about her thinning hair and that Dylan wouldn't notice if she took some of his, for herself. After Dylan and his siblings shaved her head when hair loss became quite rapid due to chemotherapy, this became the catalyst for Dylan's decision to start growing his hair to eventually make a wig for his mum. After 4 different hospitals and 6 months of long days and treatments, in the early hours of the 28th of April 2014 Anne found her eternal peace with her family by her side.

Dylan has continued to grow his hair in memory of Anne and now has enough hair to make a wig for a individual who may be in the same position as Anne and for them to be able to wear their new locks with confidence. This being the reason behind chosing the Leukaemia Foundation who were a massive help to us during Anne’s battle.
