Last year, the Winnipeg Roller Derby League All-Stars made our official international debut at 101 in the world. This year, we’re doing everything we can to climb the rankings even higher…but we need your help.
While our travel team of 20 women spends 10+ hours training every week, we (like all roller derby skaters) are still a non-professional sports team. That means that even at the highest level of competition we “pay to play” just for our love of the sport. On top of our own league fees, uniforms, gym memberships, equipment costs and more, it also means that every time we travel we cover the cost out-of–pocket—and this year the cost is extra high.
Even though there are roller derby teams all around the world, the majority of the teams and tournaments are still in the USA. This season, our team has been accepted into one major tournament so far — in Colorado in June. We will hopefully be accepted into at least one additional tournament, which would also require us to travel across the country.
These tournaments will give us a chance to put Winnipeg on the roller derby map and bring more high-level teams to our city for games. But travelling across North America a few weeks apart isn’t cheap; that’s why we need your support to make it happen!
We’re asking for donations to help cover the cost of our 2016 season. Our goal of $5,000 means each skater would get $250 to help cover her flights, hotels, and other travel expenses, but any amount would be a huge help for our team.
What do you get in return? Besides the warm fuzzy feeling of supporting women’s amateur sport and our team’s eternal gratitude, the WRDL All-Stars are also sending the thank-you gifts listed below.
