Gary's Medical Fund

Donation protected
Edit: On Friday, my father lost his battle against the severity of his wounds and the complications that arose from them. He was surrounded by family and love when he passed, and we will all miss him. The fund will still be going to pay for the extensive medical bills my mother must now face alone.

On Tuesday, September 12th, my father Gary sustained severe burns over 29% of his body in an accident at his home.

He was taken to a hospital in our home city of Austin in an ambulance, and they soon realized that his wounds were too extensive for their hospital to treat. He was life flighted to the Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio to undergo treatment in their Burn ICU.

With a burn, they estimate 2-3 days in the hospital for every 1% of burned area; this leads to a suspected max of 87 days in the hospital; this does not include the time in the ICU, which is looking to be at least two weeks.

Gary is a veteran, a Police Officer, Husband, Father, and Grandfather. He is the kindest, most ethical, and sincere man I've ever known; and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who knows him, who does not agree with that statement.

The estimated cost per day in a Burn unit is between 5k and 10k -- This is prior to specialist, topicals, and other requirements of a burn this severe.

Even with insurance, he and his wife (my mother)are looking at some heavy medical costs that they do not need to be stressed about while he is trying to recover.

My dad is the kind of man who would give someone the shirt off his back. He has given his entire life to service, to taking care of others; now he needs some help.

Anything helps; if you can't donate? Share.

I will update this page as his progress continues; as of now, he is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning, 9/15, to remove the damaged skin and tissue.

Edit: With the 10k goal reached, I raised it to a stretch goal of 15k. Below I will outline what we have now covered, and what the goals are for now.

Now covered by the fund:

The core of my fathers 'Max' out of pocket expenses through insurance -- This is roughly $7,000. The remaining deductible will also be covered.

Right now, we are waiting to see what the Life Flight is going to cost; if it is deemed to be 'out of network' and unfortunately most are, the bill could be as low as 2k and as high as 50k. I have done ample research on this, and unfortunately found more often than not that people with good insurance are getting ridiculous bills because of the nature of 'Air Bus' emergency rides.

Additionally, my parents will be having to get a custom chair made for my father to continue his recovery in at home. It must be quite large, solid leather, and work as both a chair and a bed.

There is also the question of which procedures that have been, and will be done are covered under insurance. I will keep this page updated as I gather more intel, but I know there were some questions in the nature of "But he has insurance..?" So.

Thank you all again.
