Reforestation & New Classroom Kenya

Donation protected
Dearest Absolutely Everyone!

It is my absolute pleasure and with love bursting out of my heart, a joy to inform you all that we have raised enough money to build the additional classroom that was so desperately needed at Kundeni Primary School.

With the help of the Magic Oxygen Literary Prize and the additional crucial fundraising here, we have met our target to buy the building materials that were needed, but not only that, these donations have also boosted our beautiful Word Forest exponentially to ... wait for it ... 42 times the size of Wembley Stadium!

Many thousands of new trees will now be nurtured in the nursery and they'll be planted by the children and community of Bore when they are strong enough! They will be a mixture of indiginous trees, including food bearing cashews, medicine bearing neem, water purifying moringa and tall building pole style trees too.

All of these useful commodities will help them directly and the surplus will be able to be sold at market, whereupon a new tree will be replated! The Word Forest is properly managed, the villagers know the vital importance of the environmental impact their work is having on the world. They also know the trees will encourage the rains to fall on their land and they need it to so desperately, particularly as so many of this years crops failed because of drought.

This project is legacy stuff now!

The classrooms will enable children and adults for many, many generations to come to expand their education. These tropical, almost equatorial trees will grow tall and strong and quickly too.

They have a secure future in countless ways and you all made this possible.

Thank you seems so weak a statement, but it is all I can say on behalf of Alex Katana, the Bore resident Building and Planting Project Manager, on behalf of the Headmaster John Daniel Kadenge (was until recently, James Kithi) on behalf of Ru Hartwell, our UK based Word Forest Coordinator and the man who has put countless months, personal blood, sweat and tears into enabling Bore to flourish and stand on its own two feet financially, on behalf of my soulmate and husband Simon West, who has supported my crazy idea to try and do this and moved heaven and earth technologically to create things on the www that enabled writers to enter the Magic Oxygen Literary Prize and the judges to judge the entries from wherever they were in the world (it was MOLP that started this whole journey to helping Bore, see MagicOxygen.co.uk/molp for details).

... on behalf of them all and of all the beautiful human beings in Bore, the men, women and children who live there and whose lives have been so positively transformed by the kindness of people around the planet...

I thank each and every single one of you.

If you'd like to donate further, please do, we have necessary educational resources still to buy and more work to do there, but for now, it's simply time to thank the Universe for finding you all and for getting the bulk of the work done... time for a cup of tea I think...

Our Previous Update:

It's now October 2016 and this is an ongoing, heartfelt appeal to help reforest Bore in Kenya, a community devastated by deforestation. It's also to help fund the construction of an urgently needed additional classroom at Kundeni Primary School, in the same community.

Please click here or read on for background information on what my appeal has done so far and for the reasons why it needs further support - thank you.

A couple of years ago, I founded an ethical writing contest called The Magic Oxygen Literary Prize (fondly known as MOLP) which, in conjunction with this Go Fund Me Campaign, planted a tree for every entry in the Word Forest in Bore.

It also funded the construction of an urgently needed classroom at Kundeni Primary School, located right next door to the Word Forest. Until recently, they had 300 children on their register, many of whom sleep on the floor of the school because it's too far to walk home and they only had one safe classroom to study in.

The planting and building were brilliantly adminstered by forestry expert, Ru Hartwell of the Community Carbon Link .

The Word Forest is currently 11 times the size of Wembley Stadium and has reintroduced biodiversity to the area and also provided the villagers with medicines (neem), water purifiers (moringa seeds) and food (cashews). In the longer term it will provide them with an income from the produce they can reap from the forest.

Additionally, a fabulous new classroom was handed over to Kundeni Primary School in the summer of 2016, which has increased the numbers of pupils on their register, but left them with a new problem, as 2 classrooms and over 300 children don't fit!

MOLP3 will hopefully add a huge swathe of new trees to the Word Forest and I know it will get the construction of the new classroom on its way, but the build alone will cost £7,000 which is why I'm relaunching this appeal.

If you'd like to buy some trees and building materials, I'd love to hear from you!

£20 buys 10 trees and a few bags of cement.
£50 buys 25 trees and a trailer of stone blocks.
£100 buys 50 trees and will buy the timber for the windows and door.
£250 would buy enough trees to fill St Paul's Cathedral and would buy all the materials to concrete the floor.
£500 buys 250 trees and the timber for the roof.
£1,000 would reforest more than a hectare of land and would put an entire roof on the classroom!

If we are lucky enough to raise the £7,000 needed to build the new classroom, we will turn any additional money raised into chairs, tables, books and other crucial resources for the children of Kundeni Primary School.

Thank you for absolutely anything you can do to assist.
