Better Days Ahead

It’s great that we are learning to ask: Are you okay?

But what do we do if they AREN’T okay?

In 2017, Australia will lose 3 000 lives to suicide.

Many will be young men in the prime of life. However, it could be a woman struggling with the demands of motherhood; a teenager suffering from rejection; or an older person, feeling isolated and alone.

What they have in common is that they are unable to see better days ahead.

Allow me to introduce myself:
I am the Director of the largest psychology clinics in Brisbane, Vision Psychology and M1 Psychology, and a Finalist in the Telstra Business Women's Awards 2017.

In a bid to provide hope, improve emotional health, and save lives, over the past few years my business has self-funded more than 2,800 free emotional health checks ups to individuals in our community, to the value of more than $180 000.

Even so, it is not enough.

WHAT IS AN EMOTIONAL HEALTH CHECKUP?

A big part of the problem is that people often don’t know what to do or where to go when they are troubled.

A no-cost discussion of up to 30 minutes with a mental health professional, our emotional health check up steps into this gap, by guiding members of the community to appropriate services and treatment.

And yes, some of these people do have thoughts of ending their life. I believe we have saved so many by just taking the time to listen, and illuminating the way ahead. We will never know who we save, but we do know that providing support is essential.

I have personally seen more than 1 100 people for a free emotional health check up since conceiving this approach some years ago.

However, the need is great. In order to expand this service, and reach more of the people in need of help, we are asking for your support. I can only see so many people for free myself!

HOW YOU CAN HELP SAVE LIVES

Even small amounts of funding can help us to make a big difference. For example:

$50 is enough to fund a free check up for someone looking for help.

With $5,000 we could see 100 more people.
Of that 100, most will be in desperate need of immediate professional help.

Imagine the impact we could have! People in emotional anguish could be supported; families could be spared tragic loss; the intergenerational cycle of mental illness could be disrupted; the demands on our welfare, health and justice systems could be reduced.

Our goal is to further personalise this service, by providing a card every time someone accesses a free emotional health check up. The card would contain a message of support, to let the recipient know how much you – the donor – believes in them. We want community members to know that the service is free to them, because someone cared enough to donate.

KNOWING WHERE TO FIND HELP

One in four Australians will experience anxiety; one in six, depression. With statistics like that, the next person we help, might be somebody close to you.

If they AREN’T okay, knowing where to find help is the first step to better days ahead.

We can save lives by working together. Help us to help them, either by donating or spreading the word about this campaign, or the Emotional Health Check Ups.
