One Team, One Dream

We are forming the first ever Middle School Girls Soccer team at Swain County Middle School. The team will be funded totally by a small soccer club in Swain County. It is difficult to raise funds in our area and the costs to play are an issue for many of our parents. Swain County is a small, rural county in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Swain is designated as a “Tier 1” county by North Carolina in recognition of our severely depressed economic condition. The North Carolina Rural Center estimates that 26.6% of our children live below the poverty level. At least 60% of the children at our elementary schools qualify for reduced price or free school lunches. Our unemployment rate is currently 16.3%. The US Park and US Forest Services, the Eastern Cherokee Indian Reservation, and the TVA control 81% of the land in Swain County, which reduces our county tax base.
