Wixarika Bus Fundraiser

Dear Kauyumari Family

The Wixarika Ceremonial Center of Tunuwame, located in San Andres Cohamiata in Jalisco, Mexico needs your help to purchase a bus for the Pilgrims. The Wixarika, often known as huicholes, are an original indigenous culture of Mexico. For hundreds of years they have been keeping their rituals and traditions alive. Generation after generation they have been honoring their relationship to the earth and with the original elements of life: fire, water, earth and air.

Every year, the Wixarika (Huichol) people make a pilgrimage to the sacred valley of Wirikuta to collect the sacred Hikuri (peyote) cactus, and to many other ancient sacred sites to leave offerings. This journey is central to the religious rituals of the Wixirika, as they return to where life originated and seek healing and blessings for their community and for the world.

In this sacred journey, the Marakames (Medicine Men) travel 250 miles and assume the roles of Gods along the trail that they take traditionally by foot. Upon arrival in Wirikuta, the sacred hunt for Hikuri begins, and the first cactus that is found is shared among everyone. They must then harvest enough Hikuri for the entire year. After the work of harvesting, they continue in ceremony with the Hikuri.  With the aid of the visions they receive from the Hikuri plant, the Marakame are able to speak to the Gods and ensure the regeneration of the world.

Not many years ago, their pilgrimage was done by foot, it took them months to get to the desert and then back home. Today, much of the land along the sacred pilgrimage path has been sold to ranchers, and traveling by foot has become more difficult and dangerous. Because of this, a group of concerned peoples from around the world, all of whom have received help and healing through sharing in the Wixirika culture, are putting together a fundraiser to gather money to support this precious community.

At least 50 families from the community get chosen every year to have a special roll in the pilgrimage. They are in charge of leaving the offering with which they pray for the continuum of life on this earth, theirs and ours.

Our goal is to raise $15,000 that will go towards:

·      Purchase of a bus

·      Gas

·      Bus Maintenance and renovations/modifications

·      Registration, inspection, insurance for transport

·      Travel costs for bus driver and team.

·      Immigration fees for bus (includes taxes and lawyer fees)

The bus will be purchased in New Jersey, USA and will be driven across the border into Mexico. The community of San Andrés Cohamiata is committed to use it every year for this same purpose.

With your monetary support, we can preserve this ancient culture so they may pilgrim to their sacred sites and keep their traditions alive.

Los wixaritari, comúnmente conocidos como huicholes, son un pueblo originario de México. Actualmente habitan en la sierra de Jalisco, Durango, Nayarit y Zacatecas. Por cientos de años, hombres sabios que pertenecen a esta cultura ancestral han guardado los secretos de su cosmovisión y las formas de sus rituales sagrados. Generación tras generación han honrado su relación con la tierra y con los elementos originarios de vida: el fuego, el agua, la tierra y el aire. 

El Centro Ceremonial de Tunuwane, en la comunidad de San Andrés Cohamiata, en Jalisco, necesita de tu ayuda. Todos los años, los wixaritari realizan una peregrinación sagrada que comienza en sus hogares en la sierra de Jalisco y termina en el desierto de Wirikuta, en San Luis Potosí, este es el lugar en donde crece el Hikuri (peyote), el cactus sagrado y de uso espiritual de los wixaritari.

Esta es una de las pocas peregrinaciones de América que aún conservan su ruta original. En tiempos anteriores, incluso hace 10 años, los wixaritari peregrinaban a pie, tardaban meses en caminar de la sierra al desierto y de vuelta a casa. Ahora, en el mundo moderno, y con la ruta originaria interrumpida por carreteras y terrenos privados, los peregrinos siguen la ruta que pasa por muchos de sus lugares sagrados en autobús, esto ahorra tiempo y evita situaciones complicadas, y peligrosas, a las que podrían enfrentarse a pie. 

Esta peregrinación rige el calendario con el que vivirán los wixaritari por todo el año: las fechas en las que se sembrará maíz, cuándo se cosechará, etc. Pero más importante que eso, la peregrinación es el momento en el que ellos dejan sus tareas cotidianas para dedicar un par de semanas al rezo, a agradecer a la tierra, a la vida y a sus ancestros y para pedir por la continuidad de la humanidad en la Tierra. Al llegar al desierto comienza la cacería del Hikuri, ahí colectan suficiente para todo el año. Con la ayuda de las visiones que reciben de la planta sagrada, los wixaritari se conectan con los dioses y pueden pedirles por la vida en la Tierra.

Cada año alrededor de 50 familias de la comunidad reciben cargos espirituales, ellos son los encargados, durante cinco años, de llevar a los cinco puntos cardinales sus ofrendas, todo con el propósito de que la vida en la Tierra (la suya y la nuestra) continúe.

Este año, un grupo de personas de distintos lugares del mundo hemos decidido ayudar a los wixaritari comprando un autobús que facilitará todo el movimiento de la peregrinación. Este se entregará al Centro Ceremonial de Tunuwame, una comunidad que está comprometida a utilizarlo año tras año para dejar ofrendas en los lugares sagrados.

Nuestra meta es juntar $15,000 dólares que gastaremos de la siguiente manera:

-       Comprar el camión

-       Gasolina

-       Mantenimiento del camión: refacciones y modificaciones

-       Papeles de registro e inspección

-       Seguro

-       Costos del viaje, del chofer y de quienes viajen en el camión

-       Tasas de inmigración para el camión (incluyendo impuestos y abogados)

El camión se comprará en Nueva Jersey, Estados Unidos, y un chofer lo bajará hasta México.

Con tu apoyo monetario podremos apoyar a la preservación de esta cultura ancestral, para que puedan continuar peregrinando a sus lugares sagrados, y para que sus tradiciones se mantengan con vida.
