Reparations for Lakhdar and Mustafa

$18,991 of $14.0M goal

Raised by 38 people in 18 months

All contributions will be split between Lakhdar Boumediene and Mustafa Ait Idir, who were detained in Guantanamo for seven years before establishing their innocence and winning their freedom.  For details, visit www.WitnessesBook.com.

No amount of money, not even $1 million per year,* would adequately compensate Lakhdar and Mustafa for what they went through—what we put them through. We cannot restore to them the years they lost, or the opportunity to watch their children grow up. But the fact that we can't make up for our mistakes doesn't mean we can't make an effort. And the fact that $14 million is likely unattainable doesn't change the fact that any effort will send a powerful message, and will make a meaningful difference in the lives of Lakhdar, Mustafa, and the children who were forced to grow up without them.

*$1 million per year is the amount that wrongfully imprisoned Americans typically sue for in federal court, alleging violation of their constitutional rights.  (See, for example, this article.)   Furthermore, the Canadian government recently apologized to child soldier Omar Khadr and paid compensation of over $10 million for being complicit in his detention in Guantanamo. However, the American government has refused to compensate or even apologize to Lakhdar and Mustafa.

Note on GoFundMe Campaign Logistics
-Dan Norland,Witnesses editor

GoFundMe will only send funds to bank accounts in the U.S. or Canada. With Lakhdar and Mustafa's permission, I set up a dedicated bank account in the U.S. for the sole purpose of receiving the contributions to this campaign. On the first of each month, I will mail Lakhdar and Mustafa each a certified check for half of the amount in the bank account. I am deeply honored that Lakhdar and Mustafa have trusted me both to manage this campaign and to help them share their stories in their book. I will never be able to repay them for the privilege of getting to know them, their families, and their stories.

37 years ago I came home from the hospital with my best birthday present ever, our newborn son Daniel. And almost four years later we brought home our best Christmas present ever, baby Kate. This is my birthday gift to myself, in honor of Lakhdar and Mustafa, whose bravery and fortitude give us all hope for the future, and with gratitude to Daniel and Kate (and their co-editor Jeff) for helping to share this tragic but ultimately uplifting story of honor, survival and redemption.
