Winterizing Anita Place Tent City

Donation protected
Anita Place Tent City was founded in May 2017, with a vision to create safety and security for the homeless community of Maple Ridge, as well as serve as a site of political organizing and pressure to fight for housing.

Well over a year later, the government is no closer to building the amount of social housing necessary to house everyone in Maple Ridge who is living in the streets, in shelters, in temporary modular housing, and in Anita Place.

Residents are now confronting their second winter outdoors. They know from last year's experience that it will be cold and wet, and that some people will not make it through the winter alive. Multiple people got pneumonia last year, and one homeless activist passed away from health problems that were undoubtedly exacerbated by living outdoors. Many at Anita Place battle disabilities throughout the year, but winter is definitely the most dangerous and challenging season.

The state may refuse to provide shelter, electricity, and heat to Anita Place, but residents refuse to lay down and die beneath a blanket of snow and government negligence. With your help, we can set up the infrastructure needed to shelter people from the harsh elements. Money from this fundraiser will go to purchasing the following:

-Generators & propane heaters
-Cages to safely house generates & heaters away from flammable materials
-Conduit to bury underground lines from generators to tents
-Duct to lead from propane heaters into structures
-Oil heaters for tents
-Building materials (tarps, screws, nails, wood if donations aren't sufficient)
-Blankets, socks, and clothing, as needed

If we raise enough money, we may also look into buying a used sea can to convert into a communal kitchen and living unit.

The Alliance Against Displacement is a grassroots political organization that helped found Anita Place and has remained involved on the ground ever since. We are the Chair of Camp Council and provide political support and advice to residents. Funds from this fundraiser will go to our finance officer, Listen Chen's, personal account, before being transferred to AAD's group account. Purchases will be made by AAD organizers in consultation with Anita Place Tent City Council.
