Melbourne Winter Care Package

Donation protected
It wasn’t long ago that I arrived back to Melbourne after having found the perfect spot in Noosa, Queensland. It was warm, it had the most amazing beaches and almost every evening I’d end up on the sand watching the night sky roll in and with a note book in hand, making plans for the future. It’s safe to say that I had created a lifestyle that I was content with.

But, I knew something was missing. It just never quite felt like home, and I knew why.

I packed up what belongings I had accumulated while living in Noosa, and I decided that it was time to move back to Melbourne and reconnect with family and friends. After all, what’s more important in life than the people you surround yourself with who support you, and look after you, no matter what?

I started the long and winding drive back to Melbourne where I had almost immediately regretted leaving life in the sunny coast for what seemed to be a dark bottomless abyss of cold Melbourne is this winter. The first thing I did when I got into my home was blast the heater, throw on 3 layers of clothing and of course, put on the good old moccasins… You’ve done that right? It’s not just me? It’s safe to say I was toasty warm, probably even had a sparkle of sweat drop down my forehead.

My survival instincts had kicked in and I was now a happy chappy.

But not long after I’d accomplished warmth, did I start to feel a little bit guilty. The kind of guilt that arises from having everyday things, like a roof over your head, a blanket, a meal and something to drink, that really started to root itself deep into my mind. It got me thinking about the type of household items we take for granted that thousands of Melbournian’s go without each night and instead endure the freezing temperatures our city has to offer. It’s not the first time I’d thought about it, but for some reason, this time, it weighed on my mind more than usual.

Of course, this weather makes for a great night time walk along the yarra with the magic of the blue lights on the river or perhaps a late night dessert escapade at one of many great restaurants in our town. But we forget about the cold when we snuggle into bed and the only problem we face is whether or not we should watch another episode of "Game of Thrones".

I don’t write this in order to make you feel guilty or to feel bad, you’ve worked hard to create the life you have, and nothing should stop you from enjoying the fruits of your labour.

That’s not what this is about. This is about celebrating the fact that this winter you’ve got a roof over your head, you’ve got a choice of which 3 layers of clothes you throw on, and you’ve potentially got the resources available to make an impact on others who are finding it a little bit tough and roughing the cold this winter.

So with this in mind, if you’ve ever felt like you wanted to make a difference but you weren't sure how, then I want you to join me to help the Melbournians of the streets to keep warm this winter. I propose, with your donation, we create a “Winter Care Package” and distribute it to people in need. Every single cent donated will go towards purchasing items to create the Care Package that I will personally distribute the packages myself.

CARE PACKAGE ITEMS LIST:

1: 1 Rugged Blanket

2: 1 Scarf

3: 1 Beanie

4: 1 Pair of Thick Socks

5: 1 Pair of Gloves

6: 1 Packet of Tim Tams

We will budget the best we can without compromising on quality and warmth too much. We want to create as many of these Winter Care Packages as possible with the funding that we receive from you.

This project isn’t unique, there are a lot of great people already helping in so many different ways all over the world, we want to be a part of a growing community of people who want to help those who don't necessarily have friends and family they can call on for support, or a safe and warm place to call home.

It would be amazing if you could donate to this cause, any amount will go towards a great cause. Even if you can only donate $5 or $10 to the cause, that could be a missing item in a package we otherwise couldn’t have put in. Even If you cannot donate at this time for whatever reason, a like and a share will go a long way. Every effort helps.

We know we can’t help everyone but we can make a difference to the ones we connect with and it will all be because of you.

Sincerely Yours,
