Winter for a refugee family of 5

Abu Staif, his wife and his three children under the age of 11 were forced to flee their hometown of Al Zabadani, Syria, three years ago when living conditions became unbearable.  Since that time, they have been struggling to subsist, having exhausted all of their savings.

Currently Abu Staif & family are living in the town of Zahle, Lebanon as refugees. There is a light at the end of the tunnel! This family has been sponsored to come to Canada where they hope to find a permanent home, and new opportunities for themselves and their young children.

The application was sent --- months ago, however, due to Canada's slow processing speed of these types of applications, the family will be forced to wait in their current situation for some time longer. Their Canadian immigration application won't likely even begin to be processed until the new year, meaning they must survive the winter with few resources.

Their current living conditions are lacking in heat and sufficient food, and they have had to withdraw their children from school because of the financial burden of education in Lebanon. As they are not Lebanese, they are not entitled to seek gainful employment, and they have been subsisting on  unreliable odd jobs that Abu Staif sporadically encounters.

All we are asking for is a small amount of money to help this family get through the cold damp winter with the basics: heat for their home, food for their family, and hopefully the continued education of their three young children.

100% of all money raised will be sent to the family directly via Western Union so they can use it as need be for winter basics (fuel for heating, food, shelter, etc.) The family will use this money to pay their rent (a few hundred dollars a month), buy food, and fuel for heating their home (around $9/gallon for diesel fuel - used in heaters in Lebanon).

Who are we?

My name is Anya Sass, and I am a Canadian living in Vancouver, working with a group of 5 committed individuals in conjunction with the Northwood United Church in Surrey, Canada in order to raise money to privately sponsor this Syrian refugee family to resettle in Canada under the Canadian Refugee Private Sponsorship Program. More information on the family can be found here: http://www.northwood-united.org/news/fundraising-for-syrian-refugees--202

Their application money has been raised, their sponsorship to Canada is underway, and all of their paperwork has been submitted, all Abu Staif and his family need now is a last bit of support to survive the coming months before their family can successfully resettle in Canada.

We appreciate every little a bit of help on behalf of the family.
