Hi.. My name is Athena Andrew .
I have been friends with many of you for several years and many for over 10. I am raising money for my ex-Husband, Win Hong, for his battle with Neck and Throat Cancer.
In the last 60 days, Win was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Neck and Troat cancer. Unlike most people afflicted with cancer of this kind, he is a non smoker and it does not run in his family history.
For several months prior, Win had a nagging cough which would not go away. Treated by his primary care physician as a bacterial or allergy affliction, he was given amoxicillin and Montelukast to treat the symptoms. The symptoms never fully went away. 90 Days ago Win noticed acute swelling of his left tonsil and a small pea size knot located on the left side of his neck, which he found later to be his Lymph gland. Sent to an Oncologist, Neck and Troat specialist, a biopsy was performed on the tonsil, where it was determined he had contracted Squamous Cell Carcinoma, a family of cancer which is responsible for neck and head cancer. Cause of the Cancer was determined to be due to an HPV virus which may have lay dormant in his nerve cells for many years prior to the outbreak.
Win has been seeking remedy and treatment with the Orlando Health Cancer Center team with Dr. Serra-Torro his primary Oncologist. He is in the process of going thru a battery of tests to determine a treatment plan. It is indicated that he will be going thru 6 weeks of daily radiation treatment and weekly chemo therapy . We are awaiting test results of a CT / PET scan to determine a start date of the treatment. His medical team has indicated that this type of cancer is treatable with a 90% success rate.
The pea size knot has grown to the size of a lemon and now is noticeable as an outgrown tumor located on the left side of his neck. What was originally diagnosed as a Stage 3 cancer has escalated to Stage 4 ..
A throat blister has grown inside his throat on the soft palate as well, impeding normal swallowing. He looks forward to beginning treatment soon.
The health insurance he carried was insufficient to pay for Diagnostics and only covered doctor visits and Hospital emergency care. Win was advised of the limited coverage on December 6th, several days prior to a major CT/PET scan, essential to a treatment plan.
The cost of just this scan alone was priced at $12000 w a discount for self pay. Without the coverage of adequate Health insurance, Win signed for the self pay on this test.
Win has since signed under a 2018 Florida Blue Plan which will assist in his treatment. However, this plan does not go into effect until January 2018 and not until a $7600 max deductible is paid in to Orlando Health against treatment. This is hard money spent in addition to the premiums of the Florida Blue Plan.
Win is self employed as an automotive broker/wholesaler by trade and travels between auctions and Dealership groups as part of his job.
He is being advised by his physicians that his ability to work will be diminished during the time of treatment (6 weeks) and the recovery time (6 weeks) ..greatly reducing his income since it is based on a commission / brokerage fee basis. Treatment is to begin sometime shortly subsequent to the Christmas holidays.
All of the monies raised in his behalf will go towards immediate treatment until the deductibles are met and the insurance benefits go into effect. Win has thought long and hard, with much reservation, before allowing me to use GoFundMe.com for some financial relief.
