My son had back surgery on 8/27/18 and then was hospitalized a week after for complications due to this surgery and had emergency surgery again on 9/10/18 on L1/S1  through L4/L5. He was admitted again on 9/15/18 and had a 3rd surgery on 9/17/18 for an abcess and staph in his back. He has been hospitalized since and now has infection in the vertabrae and 2 blood clots in his left leg. He will require at least 6-8 weeks of iv infusions at home when discharged. He is now in inpatient rehab to teach us how to care for him at home and will require a wheelchair, walker, transfer seat for bathing and bedside commode. His recovery will be long and painful. He has lost function in his legs, problems with his urinary and bowels (because of nerve damage).He is non ambulatory and will require home health physical/occupational therapy for 8-12 months at least until he regains strength and full function and feeling of his legs, urinary and bowels (if it's not permanent. Time will tell) He will have to follow up with infectious disease, urologist, and gastroenterologist through his recovery along with the neurosurgeon himself. He is a self employed master plumber and the sole provider for his family. His wife is unable to look for employment as he requires 24/7 care as of now. We are a humble and proud family and are finally at the point of asking for help to get us through a few months.
