Widows are one of the most vulnerable and neglected groups in Cameroon. In our community, the widows are among the poorest and most marginalized groups. There is a multiplier effect where they cannot afford quality education for their children. Consequently, some of these children drop out of school and have unwanted pregnancies, while others resort to joining bad gangs and becoming armed robbers. Therefore, we must make an effort to economically empower widows through a timely intervention that will take them out of poverty and preserve the future of their children. Widows and their children, particularly their daughters, so often suffer the most discrimination and violence in direct and indirect ways from state and non-state actors. This discrimination results from extreme poverty, marginalization, and exposure to violence, and we must make this discrimination visible so that the government can address the problem. A project to financially and economically empower widows is primordial for their well-being. This economic empowerment will allow the widows to send their children to school and sustain their family.

There are an estimated 500,000 widows in Cameroon among the population of about 20,550,000. These widows are found across some 250 different ethnic group, although the exact date is not available. With an increase in the number of people dying due to HIV, there is a corresponding increase in the number of young, child widows. For example, myths relating to the prevention or cure in the context of HIV and AIDS has led to an increase in the marriage of young children to older men, resulting in child widowhood. Many mothers and older women (grandmothers) are widowed due to the AIDS virus.

The project is setting out to empower 50 widows in the coastal area of Limbe, Cameroon. The key objective is to assist in poverty reduction and to improve the livelihood of the widows who are mostly poorly catered for and live in financial hardship. Our activities will first consist of community mobilization to identify the widows. We will then sensitize and train the widows about income generation activities.

Achieved Results and Activities: These widows are expected to learn income generation activities which will reduce the poverty and hardship they presently undergo. Secondly, the stigma and rejection they experience in the community is expeted to reduce due to the educative talks and sensitization information circulated in the community during the implementation of this project.
