Many thanks to all supporters during this initial phase of fundraising. We are so grateful!
Two years ago the Whitefield Library Association moved into Whitefield's historic Arlington Hall. This structure, built in 1884, has acted as a community gathering space in various capacities over the past 135 years and is a heartwarming symbol of rural American civic engagement.
Once used as a Grand Army Hall, a school, a performance and dance space, and most recently the home of Whitefield's chapter of the Maine State Grange, the building has been lovingly cared for by a host of caretakers. Original elements of the building (such as the ticketing window, the hardwood floors, and a vintage theatre with stage comprising the entire top floor) remain intact and are awaiting full restoration.
With a tremendous outpouring of support from friends near and far the Whitefield Library Association has raised enough funds to purchase this historic building!
We now intend to restore it as a fully functioning community library and gathering space, reestablishing its value as a vibrant center of connection, creativity, learning, and opportunity.
We admit that this is a lofty endeavor but we believe in our community. We believe that the rebuilding of rural America starts at home. We believe that the solution lies in access; access to information, to advocacy, to empowerment, to community connection. We humbly ask you to join us on this journey. Please donate today.
