Deputy Minh Ngo Wheels to Recovery

Donation protected
On the early morning of December 27, 2015, St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to an emergency call of a possible shooting (where a victim had already been shot). Upon arrival, the deputies managed to get the victim to an ambulance which transported him to a hospital. Shortly after, the suspect began to fire upon the deputies from inside his house. The stand-off lasted for hours with the suspect occasionally peeping out and shooting at the deputies, who took cover in various locations. The St. Mary Parish SWAT team was then called to assist in the situation. Deputy Minh Ngo, an operator with the SWAT team, and other fellow operators formed an extraction team. Once deployed, the team managed to get the deputies at the scene to a secure area, and await an armored vehicle for transportation to safety. As they departed to safety, Minh and his partner remained on the scene in case the suspect emerged and decided to shoot at the departing deputies. Within minutes, the suspect emerged from his residence armed with a rifle and a shotgun. A gunfight then ensued between the suspect, Minh, and his partner. Unexpectedly, the gunman shot Minh in his left knee with a 12g 00 Buck, then shortly after, in his upper right thigh with a 7mm Mag. Courageously, he managed to get himself into a nearby ditch for cover, where he remained until his fellow brothers rescued him.

With their quick teamwork, his fellow brothers helped secure his bleeding and maintained his consciousness as they waited for AirMed to transport him to an area hospital. Soon enough, Minh was met by a team of surgeons that rushed him into surgery due to his injuries and massive blood loss. With the hospital located an hour away, family, friends, and fellow officers drove from near and far anxiously waiting for news of his condition. Post-surgery, he was in ICU and I have never felt and seen so much love and warmth in my life. The ICU floor only allowed four visitors at a time and the staff never seen so many people snugged into one small ICU room before. Tough as they can be, they crowded around Minh with nothing but love, strength and heartfelt support. As Minh was questioned about work, he replied with a smile, “I’ll be back Monday.” He asked about his fellow brothers who were at the scene and their well-being. And when someone asked about him, he responded, “I’m good. Honestly, I rather it be me that got shot because y’all have family and kids to take care of.” It was then that I was truly blessed with a 23-year-old brother who was not only heroic, but has a big heart and devotion to others.

We're beyond grateful he survived this horrendous incident; however, he is now left with serious wounds with a long and difficult road to recovery. Despite his sufferings, his spirit remains high and positive. The injuries Minh sustained while rescuing his fellow officers has left him immobile for the time being with an unknown time to normalcy. Primarily, he uses a wheelchair and a walker to move around due to the pain from the massive muscle loss from the gun shots. He relies heavily on the wheelchair to get to and from doctor appointments. I, along with family and friends, am so driven and inspired by his character. Therefore, I decided to start this GoFundMe account to help offset the cost of a wheelchair for him. The current wheelchair doesn’t fit him well due to his long legs and is a rental. To hasten his recovery, a wheelchair will be the perfect gift to help lift his moral and spirits. Please help him on his road to recovery by making a donation towards his wheelchair. No matter how small or large, your gift and thoughts are greatly appreciated and will be a gift from you to him.

Every second of every day, police officers walk a thin line between life and death. Blue lives matter too. Let’s make theirs count because they make our lives safe to live. Thanks again for your time and gift, God Bless!

This fundraiser account is made by his sister, Taylor Ngo and family. We're inspired by his courage, bravery, and his drive to always put others before himself.
