Wheelchair Vehicle for Carmel

$8,553 of $30,000 goal

Raised by 103 people in 2 months
Created April 9, 2019
Carmel is an incredible little girl that has AHC which is a progressive and devastating disease.  She was diagnosed in 2017 when she was 3 years old.

Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood is a one-in-a-million neurological disorder caused by a genetic error. It is progressive, meaning over time Carmel will lose more and more abilities, and she will be ever-increasingly dependent on her wheelchair and feeding tube. She had terrible episodes of paralysis, pain, and muscle contractions, and never knows when she wakes up in the morning if this will be the last day she will ever be able to walk, talk, or eat.   Sadly, there is no cure, and Carmel’s life hangs in the pangs of this cruel, cruel disorder.

Sophie is a single adoptive mom to three amazing girls.  Her family was birthed in Zambia, where Sophie lived and worked for several years.   Sophie’s third adoption has been finalized for nearly two years, yet their family is still waiting on a visa for her third daughter.   As a single mother myself, when I think about all that Sophie has on her plate as a single mom to three girls and dealing with all of Carmel’s needs, I am so moved to compassion and compelled to do something.

Wheelchair vehicles that can accommodate Carmel’s needs and the needs of their family are extremely expensive.  Currently Sophie is driving a vehicle with 282,000 miles on it and they are unable to modify the vehicle to accommodate Carmel’s current wheelchair.  Sophie spends so much time breaking down Carmel’s current wheelchair, putting it in her trunk, and transferring Carmel when she is in terrible episodes of paralysis or extreme muscle stiffening (dystonia).    This is very difficult on Carmel and Sophie alike, and definitely not safe to continue doing.

It is my goal as Sophie’s friend to be able to help raise the funds to purchase a wheelchair vehicle for Carmel.   Since Sophie is the sole parent and provider for their family, I want to help lessen the load that is on her shoulders both financially, and physically.

Thank you, in advance.  And remember, no amount is too small!!!

Exciting news friends!

Today I got to go with Sophie (Carmel's Mom) to an appointment at the Mobility Dealership with the mobility expert. We are one step closer to securing a wheelchair accessible vehicle for Carmel!!! Lots of questions answered today, which is awesome!!! We still have much work to do, but we are confident that in Mid-July Sophie will be able to sign papers, and officially place a hold on an accessible vehicle. Then it would be 4-6 weeks from that time, where we will do our final fundraising push, and then Sophie will be able to get the KEYS!

Friends, this is no small task as we still have a significant amount of money to raise. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are VERY expensive (like 20K JUST for the wheelchair conversion), and we are going to need your help all the way! Please continue to share this page, give, PRAY, and consider both big AND small ways you may be able to help!!!!!

A few things to pray for- that we really need:

1. Two to three large donors to help boost our efforts
2. Corporate sponsors- know anyone who owns a business? know a company or team or organization who might be interested in getting behind Carmel's family?
3. We really need to reach 30K by mid-July from all fundraising sources. This does not cover the whole vehicle (remember, the conversion alone is 20K)- but it is what is needed for Sophie to hold the vehicle they end up choosing.

You are all really the most generous people. Please continue to help spread the word,

With thanks

Hello All!

Carmel was in the King 5 Seattle News this evening, and I am so encouraged to see the fund circulating again, and I know it is so humbling for Sophie to see! We are so grateful to King 5 and how they picked up Carmel's story and are doing what they can to help mobilize the public to help!

If you have not had the chance to see the story that aired on live television, make sure to watch! What a compelling story and I am reminded now more than ever, just how incredible their little family is. How amazing is it going to be when they are finally able to purchase a vehicle, with the backing of an entire community!

Please friends, keep sharing this page and invite your friends and family to give. Sharing on facebook is great, but taking it a step further and personally sharing with someone close to you will help even more. Remember, no contribution is too small!

You all are the best!
With thanks!

Hello Everyone!

We are so excited to see the progress this fund has made reaching nearly $5400 in just a few weeks. This is wonderful and a great start. The money contributed during the match 6000 has been matched!!!! (though it does not show on this fund as the donor wanted to avoid percentage fees for giving on this platform). After the matching grant, I intentionally let this fund rest a bit, and now we are hoping to amp things back up and continue to get the word out and broaden the audience.

Sophie recently posted a picture of her carrying Carmel out to the car, after she went into a paralysis episode at church. The picture was gripping and I could so see the tangible struggle that is all to real to Sophie and their family. I couldn't help but think of how miraculous a wheelchair vehicle will be for their family.

Each and every time Carmel gets in and out of the car, Sophie struggles to determine Carmel's level of need. In moments like this last week, Carmel's ended up paralyzed and her limbs were locked in a full cramp (dystonia). Sophie had to struggle to first get Carmel TO the car, and second to get her INTO her car seat. These transfers are only getting more difficult and dangerous as Carmel gets bigger. We have to help change this.

Carmel deserves to be able to have a vehicle where her chair can easily go up a ramp and lock into the floor, without needing to do any unsafe transfers. Carmel deserves to be able to comfortably ride in a vehicle with her chair that can tilt, rather than her body being forced into an extremely painful position- just to fit in her car seat.

Please friends, will you help me share the word? Will you help share and encourage people to donate (more than just a facebook share-- though those are great too!) Do you have a coworker that you could share this with....who you could personally ask to donate even $5 or $10? Do you have a friend who has a family member who is affected by disease & disability who knows just how important mobility is, that could spare $15? Do you have an idea to start a mini-fundraiser with gifts/talents/time that you could set up and easily make $50? $100?

With hope,
A.T

Hello All!

Wow, in just 10 days we have raised $4,406 for Carmel and this page has been shared 166 times!!!! This is amazing! Also, last week Sophie was informed of a matching grant up to $6,000 that would go until April 23rd. So far, $1,850 has been given that will be doubled with that grant.

Friends what that means is that $4,150 still needs to be raised for Carmel to receive the maximum match amount and there are ONLY 4 days left to do that! Four days!!!!!

Would you help us by giving even just $5, and sharing this page? Would you consider sowing into the life of this amazing family, and their ability to transport Carmel safely for many years to come? Would you help us, on this Easter Resurrection weekend, bring hope and provision to meet a very practical need?

With thanks,
Arielle
