WESLEY GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 1998 YEAR GROUP: UPGRADE OF SCHOOL SPORTS FIELD

Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong (John F. Kennedy)

SUMMARY

Continuing the tradition of giving back to our alma mater, the 1998 Year Group of Wesley Girls’ High  School has chosen to Upgrade the School’s Sports Field in our bid to produce well-rounded students by empowering them to excel not only in academics but also in competitive sports. We truly believe in the slogan of a sound mind in a sound body.

Even though the current school field is in disrepair, students have excelled in competitive sports at the regional and national levels. With an upgraded sports field, we are confident that the girls would exceed expectations and raise the bar of all-round excellence even higher.

Building a sports field is a capital-intensive project, to which the class of 1998 has already pledged USD 50,000 to. Kindly help us raise an additional USD 35,000 in support of this initiative. Construction starts in June 2018 and will be commissioned in February 2019 at the School's Annual Speech and Prize Giving Day.

BACKGROUND

Established in 1836, Wesley Girls’ High School (WGHS) has been an academic powerhouse, producing some of the nation’s most influential leaders. As Ghana’s premier high school, WGHS seeks to provide holistic and quality education in partnership with stakeholders to produce God- Fearing, well-balanced, disciplined and self-confident individuals.

Each year, the alumni class celebrating its 20th anniversary embarks on a meaningful project in support of the school’s growing needs. This year, in commemorating its anniversary the Class of 1998 has chosen to Upgrade the School’s Sports Field. This is because, as a class we recognize the overwhelming benefits of an active lifestyle in developing mental and psychological fortitude. We have already shown our passion to this cause by sponsoring the annual Inter-Houses Athletics Competition over the past six years.

Government of Ghana disbursements to public schools including WGHS is grossly inadequate and is meant to meet the most basic academic needs leaving little to next to nothing for sports and other extracurricular activities. In its current state, the school field lacks basic facilities and has no drainage structures, resulting in marshy sections and has patchy grass with insufficient ground space for field events. It also lacks the adequate number of lanes for track events and has no spectator stands or washrooms.

Even under these deplorable conditions, the students have excelled in competitive sports. In the past couple of years, the school has placed first in Super Zonal Athletics Competition (2017, 2018)and is the current winner of the Citizens International Inter-School (CIIS) Hockey Competition. With an upgraded Sports Field, we are confident that the girls would exceed expectations by providing sterling performance in sports at the regional, national and international levels. The funds raised from this campaign would go towards building a Functional Sports Field with a Football Field, Running Tracks, Washrooms and a Spectator Stand.

We invite you to partner with us as we embark on this initiative to create an enabling environment to promote the general well-being of our girls and support them to become well-rounded by imbibing the values and discipline gained through active sportsmanship. Thank you for your generous gift and please help spread the word!

Girls on track. Believe it! Achieve it!
