West Cork to New York in Song

The West Cork Choral Singers  is a community-based mixed amateur choir of some 45 members in West Cork, Ireland.

The choir was formed in 1990 and has been under the musical directorship of Diana Llewellyn since 1998.

As Diana is Welsh, she introduced WCCS to the music of her compatriot, Sir Karl Jenkins. In 2007, in one of its most memorable performances, The Armed Man (A Mass for Peace) was premièred in Ireland by the choir.

In April 2016 the choir also performed Jenkins' Stabat Mater.

So, when Distinguished Concerts International New York – whose motto is ‘changing lives through the power of performance’ – recently contacted the choir with an invitation to perform in The Music of Sir Karl Jenkins  in the Stern Auditorium of the Carnegie Hall on 15 January 2018 under conductor Jonathan Griffith, the decision to partake was not a difficult one.

There is, however, no such thing as a ‘free concert’. The choir will work very hard, as it always does, locally to attract mentors and sponsorship for the trip.

However, as the choir truly reflects the cosmopolitan nature of West Cork, with members from all over the globe, we would also like to reach out to a global audience for some financial assistance to make this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity a reality.

The trip includes two half-day rehearsals with choirs from some 14 countries prior to the concert, which will feature a US premiere for Jenkins' Sing! The Music was Given (based on a poem by Thomas Moore) and also The Armed Man.

Performing in this concert, as well as a huge musical learning experience, will also mean that the WCCS will be privileged to perform Sing! The Music was Given
in Ireland.

Thank you from all in the West Cork Choral Singers. Do come and visit us sometime, it really is ‘a place apart ’.
